Because many replace epigraphic ornament, glazed bricks, and even city blocks with newly minted substitutes, however, specialists have lamented such schemes. They are seen to obscure fact with fiction in the name of a unified visitor experience, and therefore are criticized as 'Soviet-style' restorations. This photographic folio from 1962, >Historical Monuments of Islam in the USSR<, offers an excellent survey of key structures in Central Asia prior to recent 'restoration'. . .''(thankfully quoted from 'Anneka Lenssen: 'Soviet-Style Islamic Architecture', published on the website of the CCA/Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal).

6, [2] pp. 1 vols. 12mo. 6, [2] pp. 1 vols. 12mo. The Cairo Study-Centre was founded in 1912 by the American missionary Samuel Zwemer (1867-1952), who was "the driving force behind Protestant collaborative missions to Muslims in the early twentieth century" (Sharkey, American Evangelicals in Cairo, p 92). The report details the lecture series delivered by Zwemer - one on "Islam, its doctrines and practice," and "The Moselm doctrine of God" - as well as three lectures by his colleague W.H.T. Gairdner, to the 9 students who made up the inaugural class. Gardiner also gave classes on Arabic. "Much interest was displayed, and it is quite certain that if the first year of the Study-Centre has borne no other fruit, it has at least acquainted many with the elements of the problem before Christendom, impressed them with the magnitude of Islam as a subject for study, and created a keen desire to know more, together with a salutory sense of how little was known before" (p 2). The centre merged into the American University in Cairo in 1920. Not in OCLC Original buff side-stapled wrappers. Some splitting at spine, old crease. Very good. Covers and first and last leaves with institutional blindstamp of Hartford Theological Seminary.

Prima edizione
[6], 437, [1 blank] pp.An account of the history, geography, religion, and political and social situation of the Middle East, and especially of the Arabian Peninsula, from a Christian missionary point of view. This information is presented alongside accounts of the author's experiences and it is illustrated with images of local peoples, landscapes and examples of Arabic script and music. According to the preface, this second edition of Zwemer's first work, first published in 1899/1900, was published in order to correct some minor errors that had made their way into the first edition because of the physical distance between the author and the publishers. At the time of publication, Zwemer was doing missionary work in Arabia, while his work was being published in the US. The present copy was published in Edinburgh and London, but apparently (according to the verso of the title-page) printed by the Caxton Press in New York.Reverend Samuel Marinus Zwemer (1867-1952), sometimes nicknamed "the Apostle to Islam", was an American missionary, traveller and scholar. He was a part of the Reformed Church of America, meaning that his beliefs and later missionary work were rooted in Calvinistic traditions, and he was ordained within that church in 1890. Together with James Cantine and John G. Lansing, Zwemer founded the Arabian Mission, which was active from 1889 until 1913. During that time, Zwemer was active in Iraq, Bahrein, and several locations in Arabia. He also worked in Egypt and travelled extensively throughout Asia Minor. From 1929 until his retirement at the age of 70 in 1937 he taught at the Princeton Theological Seminary, as a professor of missions and as a professor of the history of religion.Binding rubbed, soiled and slightly damaged around the corners, edges foxed, water stain in the top margin of the first leaves (until p. 14), hinges weak. With an inscription in German on the first flyleaf dated: "17. Januar 1904.", cut-out picture of a Bedouin woman pasted on the verso of the half-title-page.l List of works in the New York Public Library relating to Arabia and the Arabs (1911) p. 174. cf. Macro 2371; Shapero, The Islamic World (2003), 511.

26 ll.One of six deluxe copies (numbered 4) of a sumptuous edition of seven poems on Islam by the French poet, writer and publisher Maurice Heine (1884-1940). The entire edition comprised 77 copies, the first six (numbered 1-6) being deluxe copies printed on dyed Japanese paper and including the frontispiece in three versions, one painted on parchment and highlighted with gold. The poems included are: La demeure harmonieuse, Dans la maison moresque, Palais d'Islam, Le voyage en faience, Le cyprès, Alger-aux-barbares and La mort d'Alger. The work opens with a half-title printed in blue, followed by a blank leaf, a leaf with the privilege, another half-title, three frontispieces, the title-page, and a dedication, followed by the prologue and the seven poems. It closes with a colophon, noting the different copies of the book, followed by: "Exemplaire no. 4. Imprimé pour le docteur Pierre Astruc".With a presentation inscription to Pierre Astruc: "à Pierre Astruc, avec toute l'affection de ton ami dévoué, Maurice Heine".
