Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 283 pages. Published in 1999. The author's second collection of short stories. One of the greatest short story collections of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent edition…s. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by William Matthews: Regular-sized volume format. Black hard boards with green cloth spine and metallic-silver titles embossed on spine, as issued. Stories by Annie Proulx. Interspersed with six watercolor reproductions by William Matthews, the finest artist in the Western genre of our time. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper (for the text) and glossy stock paper (for the art) in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Annie Proulx's "Close Range: Wyoming Stories". Eleven stories, two of which are now regarded as masterpieces written at the close of the 20th century: "The Half-Skinned Steer" was selected as one of "The Best American Short Stories of the 20th Century" by John Updike. "Brokeback Mountain" was issued in the United Kingdom by itself, remains one of Proulx's most controversial and most beautiful stories, and is the basis of the great film by Ang Lee, with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. "Annie Proulx demonstrates what makes her great: Images sharp as paper cuts conveyed in language so imaginative and compressed, a sense of character so specific it takes only a sentence to establish a whole life and the underlying promise of something utterly unexpected up ahead". An absolute "must-have" title for Annie Proulx collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Annie Proulx. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as copies available online are. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Annie Proulx's signature is TINY. Because of "Brokeback Mountain", this title has become one of Annie Proulx's most collectible titles: A signed and inscribed copy fetched $3000 at auction in 2005, an incredible sum by any measure. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1993 for "Postcards". Winner of the National Book Award in 1993 and the Pulitzer Prize in 1994 for "The Shipping News". One of the finest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (12 pp.), map showing location of Holm Lodge, illustrated from photographs including a centerfold of Holm Lodge Lounge and Dining Room, tourist information such as fishing, hiking, horseback riding, proximity to Cody, Yellowstone Park, Fishhawk Glacier, etc. "The story of Crossed… Sabers Ranch begins back in 1898 when it was incorporated by Aaron ?Tex? Holm as Lodge 3 of the Holm Transportation Company. Holm?s transportation business was to move people by steam-powered car from Cody, WY to the lodge, and then by carriage from the lodge to the newly formed Yellowstone National Park where his other two lodges stood. The original Holm Lodge was a collection of wall tents in which guests would sleep. But, as interest in the dude ranching business increased in the early 20th century, more prominent guests began to make their way westward and more sophisticated accommodations quickly followed. Six framed sleeping cottages went up in 1912 in addition to twelve, four-man tents and twelve, single-man tents bringing the total guest capacity to 200 tourists. Disaster struck soon after when the main building of the lodge burned down in 1914 and Tex went out of business from the new regulations allowing tourists to take private vehicles through the park. He was bought out by one of his former share-holders, J. W. ?Billy? Howell. Howell?s horses carried his personal brand of the crossed sabers for the ranch. The name changed to Holm Lodge Crossed Sabers Ranch, and, not long after, simply Crossed Sabers Ranch. It became one of the original dude ranches that operated in the state of Wyoming. So began the Crossed Sabers Legacy. " (Wikipedia) A few small nicks and closed tears to the fore-edges, faint evidence of a vertical crease, interior clean and tight, else a very good copy.

Aggiungi al carrelloA fascinating Civil War naval log maintained by an ensign during service aboard the USS Wyoming, incorporating his eyewitness account of the action in the Shimonoseki Straits on 16 July 1863, the first clash between the US Navy and Japanese vessels. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the Wyoming, a wooden-hulled screw sloop, lay…at anchor in San Francisco. After early service along the California coast protecting Union whaling interests from Confederate threats, she cruised in South American waters during the first half of 1862 before being ordered to the Far East to hunt Confederate commerce raiders, notably the CSS Alabama, which eluded her. The mission soon brought the Wyoming into collision with the isolationist policies of the Japanese emperor. "In accordance with the Emperor Komei's 'Order to expel barbarians' [11 March 1863], the Shimonoseki-based Choshu clan under Lord Mori began to attack western shipping in the Shimonoseki Straits. During June and early July, Lord Mori's warships and coastal artillery fired on US, French, and Dutch vessels. The USS Wyoming was then sent into the straits and was also attacked. It retaliated by bombarding shore batteries, sinking two Japanese warships and damaging another" (Encyclopaedia of Warfare). Pearce's journal begins on 26 October 1861 with his appointment as acting master mate, reporting for duty at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In early November he shipped out for the Far East, adding to his log extensive detail of supplies and munitions garnered for the voyage. Sailing via Honolulu, Manila and the Ladrones (present-day Mariana Islands), the Wyoming patrolled the Pacific for the rest of 1862 and into the first half of 1863. For most of May, June, and July 1863, the Wyoming lay at anchor off Yokohama. On 25 June 1863 the American merchant steamer Pembroke was fired on by Japanese ships and shore batteries while anchored off Shimonoseki. The Wyoming left Yokohama on 13 July and by the 16th was in action, Pearce giving a gripping account of the brief engagement: "At 5:10 got underway & steamed toward the Straits of Simona Saki. At 9 went to general quarters, loaded the pivot guns with shell, and cleared ship for action. At 10:45 am entered the Simona Saki Straits & beat to quarters. On entering 3 signal guns were fired from the batteries on shore on the starboard hand, immediately two shots were fired at us from the 1st battery. upon which we hoisted our color & opened fire in return with 11 in shell from Pivot guns & solid shot from our Broadside guns, the starbd. In passing thro' the straits we engaged 4 batteries. One steamer, one bark, & one brig (all flying the Japanese colors at the peak & flag of Prince Choshoe [Choshu] at the fore) were lying in the straits, they also opened fire on us which we returned. After passing all the batteries & vessels, we returned & engaged them a second time. At 12:10 stopped firing and steamed out of the straits having been one hour & 10 minutes under fire." The Wyoming put into Yokohama, "nursing damage to her funnel and rigging, having plugged the damage from the eleven Choshu shots that had pierced her hull" (Denney, p. 156). The log concludes with the return to the Philadelphia Navy Yard in July 1864, the Wyoming having completed a circumnavigation of the globe. Pearce later transferred to the Union ironclad New Ironsides, then regarded as the most powerful ship in the US Navy. In a vivid 16-page autograph letter on blue paper (split along the horizontal fold) to "My own dearest Rose", he offers a meticulous account of the First Battle of Fort Fisher (23-27 December 1864), accompanied by a small blue-pencil sketch map of the Confederate batteries. The log also contains an original pen-and-ink map of the engagement at Shimonoseki (180 × 230 mm, mounted and tipped in), marking Japanese batteries and the positions and movements of the ships involved. The entry for 15 July is illustrated with two coloured-pencil sketches of flags flown by vessels of the Ch sh domain - the daimy 's flag at the fore and the hinomaru at the peak. The album ends with an itinerary of the Wyoming's ports of call and a contemporary copy of a photographic portrait of Pearce in uniform, taken from an "original made in 1864", beneath which a holograph note records his rise from master's mate to acting ensign and, finally, acting master. John Denney, Respect and Consideration: Britain and Japan 1853-1868 and beyond, 2011; The Encyclopaedia of Warfare: Imperial Wars 1815-1914, 2013. Quarto (338 x 218 mm), approx. 160 pp. Commercial ledger book, brown hessian over boards, green marbled endpapers. Housed in a custom green quarter morocco slipcase and matching cloth chemise. Spine missing but covers firmly attached, edges of binding reinforced with tape, covers rubbed and stained, generally toned internally and with some light signs of handling, a few leaves loose, otherwise in very good condition.

Aggiungi al carrello4to. Three pages, approximately 275 words, in part: "There is not to my mind, outside of Divine Writ, so convincing an evidence of the immortality of the soul, as is furnished by the growth and development of the mind and character of this greatest of American Presidents to meet the exigencies of the direction and control of a g…reat Revolution, on the successful issue of which depended the happiness of one fifth of the world . as his career differed from that of the other heroes of history, in that he lived and strove for reforms that would benefit mankind though his own life should be the price, in so far is Abraham Lincoln the greatest of Reformers, the noblest of Patriots, the ablest of men." This essay was published along with other tributes to Abraham Lincoln in The Lincoln Memorial (NY, 1882). Very good. Folded. (#6317). Wesley Merritt graduated from West Point in 1860, serving briefly in the West, before returning east for Civil War service in the Union cavalry attached to the Army of the Potomac, participating in its major campaigns and battles through Appomattox, ending the war commanding a division as a Major General. Following the war he commanded the 9th Cavalry in Texas for eight years; promoted to colonel in 1876, he took command of the 5th Cavalry in Wyoming, participating in the Custer campaign and other actions against the Indians and serving in that capacity until 1882 when he was appointed to a five-year posting as superintendent of West Point. He commanded the 1898 expedition to the Philippines during the Spanish-American War.
