Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Israel Zangwill (1864 - 1926) was a man with a mission. He dedicated his life wholeheartedly to a number of causes: Jewish emancipation, women's suffrage, and social assimilation being among the most prominent. His famous novel, "Children of the Ghetto" was hugely influential, and his play, "The Melting Pot" popularized that very phrase. This play is still being performed and is a powerful statement of the need and desire of immigrants to be assimilated into their new national environment. Zangwill wrote a large number of books, most of them well-received by critics and public alike. The play here offered, "The Cockpit" is one of Zangwill's anti-war productions. It can be imagined that a world that had just suffered through the insanity of World War I would welcome any such effort on behalf of continuing peace. TITLE : The Cockpit, Romantic Drama in Three Acts AUTHOR : Israel Zangwill IMPRINT : Macmillan Company PLACE : New York DATE : 1921 EDITION : First Edition STATUS : OP - Out of Print PROVENANCE : X-Library. This is a rebound deaccessioned library copy, with the original binding replaced by the library with its one of its own. DETAILS : Trade hardcover; 264 pages; 5" x 7 3/16"; bright blue buckram with yellow decorative embellishments (a library binding - a stamp from the bindery appears on the final page of the book) The front cover has been given a striking design in bright yellow reminiscent of modern abstract art. CONDITION -- GOOD ONLY -- Clean and presentable X-LIBRARY volume with stamps, labels, catalog number and blind embossed stamp - reduced in size and rebound in sturdy library buckram - exterior has a bit of surface rub (mostly on spine) - text-block edges are toned but clean - the interior has a few spots and smudges, - nothing egregious, and is basically clean and presentable throughout with but modest signs of use.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition oblong black-and-white photographic boards. Contents includes: Foreword, Views & Street Scenes, Transportation, Home & Farm, Commerce & Industry, Schools & Education, Community, Disasters, Recreation & Celebration and Index. Profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs. "For Reference" sticker neatly affixed to upper edge of inner front board and three library stamps. Uncirculated "For Reference: Not to be taken from this room" Geneology Department copy. "To our family or readers: This second edition of Rockford Memories comes close to crossing the line between history and, well, not history. It's one thing to chuckle over the haircuts and automobiles of the 1920s, and another altogether to find one's high school graduating class in a book of historic photos. As you page through the 1940s, '50s, and '60s, many will experience that slight disconnect between the truly historical and the memories of things that were your childhood and adult years. As with our first edition, this photographic history of Rockford captures the pelople and places, the news and the lives of those who shaped the Rock River Valley. There are hundreds of photos shared by our readers and our partner, Midway Village Museum. Dozens more come from the Rockford Register Star archives. I am grateful to those who share and preserve our history. It is the right thing to do. I thank, too, Pat Cunningham, former editorial page editor of the Register Star and author of our history book, "Big Town, Little City," which published in 2000. Pat wrote the text for this edition of Rockford Memories, as well as the text for Rockford Memories I. This collection connects the historical narrative of our community with today's community conversation - and through them both we understand ourselves. - Scott Bowers, President and Publisher, Rockford Register Star, from the Foreword.

First printing of the first hardback edition in English (published simultaneously with a paperback issue). Translated by Alastair Hamilton. Illustrated with four black and white photographs. Jacket illustration by John Sewell. ***Please note that this is an ex-library copy. ***A very good copy in brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards have tape off-setting marks from where the dustwrapper had been taped to the boards by the library - mostly along the fore-edge of the front board. No serious bumps or creases. The spine has no reading creases and the corners are quite sharp. Top edge of page block slightly discoloured, and a small mark on the fore-edge. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally the book has the following library marks: tape offsetting and card pocket on the front pastedown with original typed library cards, library sheet, London Borough of Enfield - Southgate (Palmers Green) library plus barcode on the front free endpaper, library stamp on the printer's page (please see scans). No other obvious marks. No foxing to interior pages. Pages clean. No creases or tears. ***In a near fine illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £2.95. The dustwrapper is complete and in beautiful condition, having been protected by the library sleeve (now removed). Just minor rubbing to the extremities. No chips or tears. No creases. No fading. Patch of residue at the bottom of the spine where there was a library sticker. Dustwrapper otherwise bright. ***204mm x 138mm. 255 pages. ***'To Antonin Artaud, drama was necessarily the drama of life, a drama that involved the audience as an integral part of the action. This revolutionary theory of the indistinguishable link between the incarnation of drama and the dramatisation of life is equally evident in the film scenarios and writings contained in this volume. Written in the thirties, the scenarios are quite extraordinary precursors, both visually and theoretically, of modern underground movies. This volume also contains texts on the cinema and an important collection of correspondence with several major figures from the literary world as well as that of the theatre.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First printing of the first simultaneous hardback edition in English of Volume 3 of Antonin Artaud: Collected Works. The hardcover issue is quite uncommon, as there was a simultaneous paperback issue which was produced in a larger print-run. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
