His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If - " (1910). He is seen as an innovator in the art of the short story. Kipling in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was among the United Kingdom's most popular writers. Henry James said "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius, as distinct from fine intelligence, that I have ever known." In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, as the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and at 41, its youngest recipient to date. He was also sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and several times for a knighthood, but declined both. Following his death in 1936, his ashes were interred at Poets' Corner, part of the South Transept of Westminster Abbey. Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed with the political and social climate of the age. The contrasting views of him continued for much of the 20th century. Literary critic Douglas Kerr wrote: "[Kipling] is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognised as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with." The collection of Barrack-Room Ballads was issued in March 1892, first published individually for the most part in 1890, and contained his poems "Mandalay" and "Gunga Din". Signed by author.

By the 1950s, with a growing reputation for his sickle cell research, he was among the first black doctors granted privileges at such facilities as Children's and Providence hospitals, according to press reports at the time. The Washington Post noted then that several hospitals had an 'unwritten ban against Negro physicians.' Complete sets are very uncommon due to the long publishing history and the fact that, though it is called a Uniform Edition, it was never sold new as a set. Someone has clearly spent years putting this together.

Publisher's limp burgundy leather, spines richly gilt with a circular gilt devices repeated to the upper covers, some volumes with the neat original owner's signature to the front free endpaper. A bright and notably well preserved set. Macmillan's uniform pocket edition was published over a long period of time and seldom comes complete, this volume comprises all those listed on the verso of the half titles except "Songs from Books". Nor does it include any volumes of Kipling's verse which, although not listed, often appear in this format.

The Bombay Edition, one of only 500 possible complete sets signed by the author on the half-title. The Bombay edition was initially published in 20 volumes and limited to 1,000 copies. Kipling continued to write and the edition eventually grew to 31 volumes, but the last 11 volumes were limited to 500 copies only. Because later volumes were issued separately and at a lower limitation, complete sets such as this one are rare. 31 vols, octavo. Attractively bound in recent brown morocco, red and green morocco labels, centre tool to spines gilt, marbled endpapers, decorative roll to boards, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. A fine set.
