Each volume is bound in olive-green cloth with orange/yellow spine labels and gilt-tinted top edges, preserving the refined aesthetic of its Edwardian origins. The bottom edges are jagged and indicative This complete 10-volume set captures the scope of Kipling's genius ? from his vividly drawn tales of colonial India to his deeply human poetry and ballads ? making it a cornerstone collection for any classic literature library. About Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936): Rudyard Kipling was one of the most celebrated authors of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, known for his evocative storytelling and lyrical mastery. Born in Bombay, India, and educated in England, Kipling's works captured the complexity of empire, identity, and adventure. He became the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature (1907), honored for his keen observation, imagination, and narrative power. Among his best-known works are The Jungle Book, Kim, and Just So Stories, but his short fiction ? much of which appears in this Edition de Luxe ? remains some of the most vibrant writing of its time, blending exotic settings with universal human emotion. Synopsis of the Collection: This ten-volume Jefferson Press Edition gathers some of Kipling's most iconic works, charting his evolution from journalist and storyteller to master of prose and verse. "Plain Tales from the Hills" and "Soldiers Three" reveal the humor and irony of British-Indian life. "The Phantom 'Rickshaw" and "Mine Own People" explore psychological depth and supernatural nuance. "Letters of Marque" offers travel impressions and cultural portraits from colonial India. "The Light That Failed" stands as a haunting meditation on love, loss, and artistic vision. "Poems, Ballads and Other Verses" encapsulate his lyrical range ? from heroic to deeply introspective. Together, these volumes form an essential portrait of the imperial imagination and the inner world of one of literature's most distinctive voices. Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. The Outward Bound Edition complete in 36 volumes. Various dates of publication from 1897 to 1937. Original publisher's 3/4 morocco with blue marbled boards. Spine in six compartments of raised bands and gilt floral motifs. Gilt text in compartments two & three. Top edges gilt. Edges are uncut. Marbled end-papers. Volumes 32- 33 an 34 have considerable wear on the boards with some areas completely worn off.The Outward Bound edition was published in installments between 1897 until the end of Kipling?s life in 1936. The complete set eventually included 36 volumes. However variations appeared in the printing over the years. Text published in two volumes in earlier printings was combined into single volumes to save money on the part of the publishers. The published letters of Rudyard Kipling (2004) indicate that Kipling often disapproved of the cost-saving measures of Scribner's, preferring that later printings kept the same numeration of the volumes as the earlier ones. Each volume has a frontispiece with a tissue guard. Illustrative plates, portraits and maps throughout. This handsome set belonged to Richard Hugh Schaddelee, an accomplished yachtsman from Grand Rapids, Michigan. A copy of the February 4, 1957 Sports Illustrated with his picture on the cover is included. Also includes is a letter dated November 29, 1937 addressed to Mr. Schaddelee from Charles Scribner's Sons concerning the extremely scarce final three last volumes (34, 35 and 36) of this set. The Limited Printing notice from the Publisher is also included. A rare find! Due to size and weight (60 lbd.), additional shipping will be required.Full refund if not satisfied.
