The author, who specializes in educational policy, school reform, teacher preparation, and educational equity and social justice, and is a former dean of a school of education, explores how progressives, liberals, Democrats, teachers unions, and civil-rights organizations talk about education in ways that are framed by conservatives and end up advancing solutions that are counterproductive. He explains how this occurred in relation to key battles in education, discussing the legacies of imperialism, white supremacy, nationalism, colonialism, the Cold War, unionizing, the civil rights movement, conservatism, and neoliberalism for public education, as well as key moments when the retreat of the Left and federal government allowed for a bipartisan convergence in conservative areas of privatization, school choice, and vouchers. He then discusses affirmative action, free speech and hate speech, bullying and violence, teacher shortages, and student debt in the context of current problematic frames and alternative ones that progressives can use to address these problems.
