This guide explains how to use the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) to assess the quality of children’s early care and education settings, focusing on classrooms of preschool children from 36 months through five years of age in center-based care and education settings. The scale assesses the physical environment, children's interactions with each other and adults, activities in cognitive and social domains, and children's health and safety. The guide describes the measure and its psychometric properties and how scores relate to each other and also provides background on the scale and its third revision, its administration, subscales, comparability, and validity and reliability, as well as the use of descriptive statistics for summarizing single variables and their relationships, analysis of Head Start programs as an example, the relationship between subscales, examining groups with shared characteristics, and special issues, such as race and ethnicity, children with disabilities, and international uses.
