Guardando oltre alle categorie ben indagate di spoliazione e reimpiego, Wastework mette in primo piano lo scarto come espressione materiale di pratiche di ordinamento e classificazione di chi decide di volta in volta tra raccolta e smaltimento, desiderato e indesiderato, salvezza e perdita. Gli autori del volume seguono i destini di stracci sporchi e foglie di indaco in decomposizione, sbirciano i macchinari teatrali dietro il sipario, si avventurano nella fonderia del fabbro, nel laboratorio del chimico, e nelle gallerie dei minatori. Riunendo ricerche di storici dell'arte, dell’architettura, della scienza e dell’ambiente, questo volume esamina gli atti di smaltimento e di riuso, e le conseguenze questi comportano per lo studio della cultura materiale della prima età moderna. Attingendo al campo dei Discard Studies e dell’ecomaterialismo, questi saggi mettono alla prova l’utilità di formulazioni contemporanee – sostenibilità, riciclo, zero-waste, ciclo di vita del prodotto, flussi metabolici – e propongono nuove categorie con cui re-immaginare il passato che abbiamo scartato.

Francesca Borgo is Lecturer at the University of St Andrews and Principal Investigator of the five-year Lise Meitner Group Decay, Loss, and Conservation in Art History at the Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History, Rome. Ruth Ezra is Lecturer at the University of St Andrews, where she specializes in the material and visual culture of early modern northern Europe. She is most curious about techniques and materials, workshop practices, and feedback loops between process and form.
