A proposito della Libreria

***** After more than two decades of serving clients in the international Oriental rug trade it became evident that there was a large and unsatisfied demand for books on the subject. The business was set up, over 40 years ago, in 1971. Since I was then living in Little Abington, I called it ABINGTON BOOKS. ***** Its principal object was to source and supply any sort of printed material (which, therefore, included auction, collection, exhibition and museum catalogues ; journals and magazines ; posters ; and “ephemera”) on Oriental carpets and rugs. We can, with over sixty years of active involvement in the international rug world, claim to be reasonably knowledgeable about these. ***** Our spectrum was broadened at the insistence of Charles Sternberg, then London’s leading dealer in tapestries, to include material on CLASSICAL tapestries (NOT modern ones) about which we had – and still have – only a minute amount of knowledge. And, inevitably, we have chosen to offer many items in peripheral items such as Persian Arms, Indian Embroideries, Eastern European folk art, Central Asian art, travel in the East, and so forth. ***** All our stock was recorded, often in considerable detail, on a digital card index together with information about most of the literature on rugs that was known to us. In all there were some 20,000 entries at the time our PC burnt out two years’ ago. EVERYTHING (incl. correspondence, invoices, mailing lists and so on) had been recorded on an MSDOS programme specifically created for booksellers. Because of this it has, unfortunately, proved impossible to retrieve. The consequence is that we have lost not just this major bibliographic resource - which we were within a year or two of publishing - but we have also lost some 30 years of business and private archives. Only a minute amount has been saved, and this has proved inconvenient to access. ***** At the time of writing we have some 2000 items in stock, of which barely half have so far been downloaded onto our lists with ABEBOOKS. For enquiries about this other half, and/or about anything in our speciality, do contact me by phone (+44 (0) 1449-78.03.03, between 5 pm and 11 pm UK time), by e-mail (Abington-books@btconnect.com), or by post. ***** Enquiries in English ***** Enquêtes en Français ***** Erkundigungen auf Deutsch *****. ***** Visitors are welcome but, as these are private premises, only by prior arrangement. Since Finningham is buried in the heart of the glorious Suffolk countryside, we will gladly meet trains arriving at STOWMARKET Station from London (Liverpool Street Station). And, of course, take you back to the station for the 1½ hour journey back into London. ***** All confirmed orders are packed and despatched by post on the next working day except in cases where the weight and/or value of a book justifies our using a commercial carrier such as DHL or Hermes. Payment, like to the orders, should be through the good offices of ABEBOOKS. ******** ********** We look forward to hearing from you ! ********* ********** ********** Jack Haldane ********** ********** **********
