Martini, p. 144 (allerdings mit bibliographisch nicht ganz vollständiger Erschließung der Ausgaben, siehe im Folgenden). - Bände 1-5 jeweils in der bei Martini erwähnten letzten und umfangreichsten Ausgabe (d.h. je nach Band in 2. oder 3. Ausgabe), der 6. Teil in einziger Ausgabe. In Abweichung zu Martini, der eine zweite Ausgabe des 5. Bandes (Weintrauben) allerdings auch nicht erwähnt, hat der hier vorliegende Band nicht 32 Farbtafeln, sondern 54, insofern ist Martini hier zu ergänzen. - Jan ?íha absolvierte eine Ausbildung zum Tischler und später als Gärtner und arbeitete sich durch seinen eigenen Fleiß zu einem führenden Experten für Obstsorten in Europa hoch. 1892 wurde er Bezirksgärtner in Chlumec, wo er 1919 im Auftrag des Landwirtschaftsministeriums eine staatliche Obstgärtnerei gründete. Er sammelte etwa 2000 Sorten von Obstbäumen und -sträuchern, die Grundlage des staatlichen Obstarboretums, das nach ?íhas Tod 1925 von seinen Schülern in Újezd bei Pr?honice gegründet wurde." (wikipedia, cz.). - ?íha gilt als Vater der tschechischen Pomologie, sein hier vorliegendes Werk stellt das Vermächtnis seiner jahrzehntelangen Sammelleidenschaft und Forschungen zu Obstsorten dar. Es galt lange Zeit als Standard der tschechischen Pomologie schlechthin und ist noch heute unabkömmlich. - Zu den Bänden erschienen auch sehr fragile Schutzumschläge, diese sind bei auf dem Markt angebotenen Bänden in der Regel abwesend oder wie hier stärker lädiert (liegen bei). Das Werk gehört zweifelsohne zu den schönsten pomologischen Drucken des 20. Jahrhunderts, dies sowohl aufgrund seiner aufwendigen Illustrationen, die in der Regel die Frucht am Zweig in Farbe auf einer farbigen Tafel, sowie Querschnitte, Formschemata, Blütenzweige und Kerne auf einer weiteren, der jeweiligen Sortenbeschreibung quasi vorangestellten Titelseite zeigen, als auch aufgrund der dem Stile des Art Deco verpflichteten Drucksatzgestaltung und Buchschmucks. - [00B | SOD | oR ] 9500 g.
