Hilft es doch zu Nichts, schlechthin Gesundheitsregeln zu geben; es muss auch allen Volksclassen so gut als dem Einzelnen die Möglichkeit gegeben seyn, unseren unabweislichen Lebens- und Gesundheitsbedingungen oder mit andern Worten: den Gesetzen unserer Natur Genüge zu thun. Diess aber zu ermöglichen ist Sache der staatlichen, kurz aller gesellschaftlichen Einrichtungen, und insofern kommt der Hygieine, zumal in unsern Tagen, z.B. für den ächten Staatsmann, auch den Erzieher keine viel geringere Bedeutung zu als z.B. für den Arzt und jeden Menschenfreund." p. Jhs. entstand in Deutschland, befördert durch Industrialisierung und Verstädterung "eine starke Hygienebewegung unter der Führung von Max von Pettenkofer (1818-1901). [.] Die präbakteriologischen Hygieniker kämpften gegen 'Schmutz und Gestank'. Wenn dies auch unzureichend war, so trug es doch viel zur Beseitigung von Krankheitsursachen und -überträgern, wie z.B. Ratten und Läusen, bei. Die präbakteriologische Hygienebewegung konzentrierte sich auf den Kampf gegen überfüllte Wohnungen, verschmutzte Wasserversorgung, schlechte Kanalisation, verfälschte Nahrung und Kinderarbeit. [.] Nach 1850 wurden Wasserversorgung und Kanalisation in Westeuropa verbessert. Nahrungsmittelgesetze wurden in den siebziger Jahren eingeführt; Lehrstühle für Hygiene in den sechziger Jahren gegründet." (etc.; E. Ackerknecht, Kurze Gesch. d. Medizin, 1959, p. 172 f.). -- Friedrich Oesterlen (Murrhardt, Wtbg. 1812-1877 Stuttgart), Mediziner. 1845 Professor in Dorpat, "hat sich durch eine Reihe bahnbrechender Schriften besonders um die Hygiene und die medizinische Statistik verdient gemacht. " (Brockh. 12, 1894, mit Bibliographie). - Oesterlens 'Handbuch der Hygieine' "lehnte sich zunächst an französische und englische Vorbilder an; es war das erste, das den in jenen Ländern gewonnenen Stand der öffentlichen und privaten Gesundheitspflege auch in Deutsch.

März 1812, studierte 1830 bis 34 in Tübingen, machte 1835 wissenschaftliche Reisen nach Wien, Würzburg, Paris, liess sich in seiner Geburtsstadt nieder, habilitierte sich 1843 als Privatdozent in Tübingen und wurde bald danach zum Professor ernannt. 1845 erhielt er einen Ruf als Prof. der med. Klinik in Dorpat, gab diese Stellung aber infolge eines ihm nicht bewilligten Urlaubes 1848 freiwillig auf, praktizierte 1849 bis 53 in Heidelberg, zugleich als Privatdozent daselbst und begab sich nach einem 4jähr. Aufenthalt in Stuttgart 1858 nach der Schweiz, praktizierte in Zürich und Glarus, kehrte 1870 nach Stuttgart zurück und starb hier 19. März 1877. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 1200.
