Lievi fioriture sparse, leggero alone al margine esterno delle ultime carte, ma ottima copia genuina.Prima edizione del trattato di dietetica ed igiene del medico senese Ugo Benzi con le annotazioni del medico torinese Giovanni Lodovico Bertaldi, cui si deve anche l'appendice, stampata qui per la prima volta, sull'abuso di alcol e tabacco. L'edizione venne ristampata sempre a Torino due anni dopo.Il Tractato utilissimo circa la conservazione della sanitade di Ugo Benzi, stampato per la prima volta a Milano nel 1481, fu una delle primissime opere di igiene e dietetica ad essere pubblicata in italiano. Probabilmente tale opera, della quale non esistono copie manoscritte, fu dapprima scritta in latino e poi tradotta in italiano dallo stesso Benzi o da qualche altro autore. La ricomparsa dell'opera di Benzi a Torino nel 1618 è una testimonianza della sua longevità e indica, al tempo stesso, che la pratica medica ordinaria era in ritardo di almeno un secolo rispetto allo sviluppo della teoria scientifica. Sorta di compendio della dieta galenica, dopo aver discusso di aria, esercizio fisico, sonno ed alimentazione, la maggior parte dell'opera descrive in dettaglio le proprietà, le qualità e gli usi medicinali di vari cibi e bevande, disposti in ordine alfabetico fino alle voci ?zucchero?, ?uva? e ?vino?.L'appendice del Bertaldi tratta dei cibi esotici, delle ?passioni dell'animo? (tra cui amore, ira, paura, gelosia, speranza, odio, ambizione, avarizia, invidia e tristezza), per poi passare a considerare l'abuso di tabacco e alcol, aggiungendo diversi rimedi per l'ebbrezza non menzionati da Benzi e piuttosto bruschi, tra i quali per esempio l'uso praticato a Ginevra di una ruota gigante sulla quale gli ubriachi venivano fatti girare fino a vomitare.Ugo Benzi nacque a Siena nel 1376. Lo zio Marco era medico famoso a Siena. Le condizioni economiche del padre Andrea, magistrato di professione, furono buone finché, battuta la sua fazione e scoppiata la guerra tra Siena e Firenze, cadde in rovina, tanto da essere imprigionato per debiti, donde lo avrebbe liberato il figlio nel 1405. Dopo aver frequentato a Siena la scuola di grammatica di un certo Bennazio, probabilmente nel 1393 si recò a Firenze, dove iniziò lo studio della filosofia, continuato poi a Bologna alla scuola di Pietro Mantovano, col quale tuttavia giunse nel 1394 ad una rottura per motivi non chiari. In seguito a questa polemica il Benzi si sarebbe ritirato in casa, dedicandosi allo studio della logica, filosofia, medicina, astronomia, aritmetica, geometria, musica, grammatica e retorica. Si trasferì quindi a Pavia, dove nel 1396 si laureò in logica et philosophia e poco dopo incominciò ad insegnare logica fino al 1402. Successivamente chiamato all'Università di Bologna il Benzi vi riorganizzò l'insegnamento della filosofia, promuovendovi lo studio delle opere di Averroè e di Alberto Magno. A Bologna studiò anche medicina alla scuola di Marsilio di S. Sofia. Nel febbraio del 1405 il Benzi fu ingaggiato dall'Università di Siena per l'insegnamento della medicina. Nel 1409, venuto in sospetto ai governanti, Benzi lasciò Siena ed entrò al servizio, in qualità di medico, del cardinale Baldassarre Cossa, seguendo quest'ultimo prima a Pisa, poi a Bologna. In seguito, chiamato a Parma da Niccolò d'Este, subito dopo la riapertura, a lui dovuta, dell'università, nel novembre del 1412, il Benzi insegnò medicina in quella città per quattro anni consecutivi, anni particolarmente fervidi di lavoro; scrisse allora tre dei suoi principali commentari, a Galeno, agli aforismi di Ippocrate, ad Avicenna, e alcune Quaestiones rerum naturalium.
