The work was first published at Brescia by Lisandro Bozzola in 1562 and then reissued in 1567 at Pavia by Girolamo Bartoli, who also, in 1573, printed the ?definitive' edition on which all later editions (1575, 1576, 1580, 1584, 1585 twice, 1590, 1591, and 1596) were based. It was translated into French by Gabriel Chappuys (Lyon, 1584) and put on the index in 1590, with the reserve to be expurgated.Most of the 61 pieces in this collection are fictitious letters, and burlesque and paradox tracts (cf.
