Franco Crainz rubber stam…p on title. Very good. FIRST EDITION. [Title translates as: 'ON THE INDECENCY OF MALE PHYSICIANS ATTENDING TO WOMEN IN CHILD-BIRTH. '] In this work, the pious French physician and theologian Philippe Hecquet argued that it is immodest and indecent to have male accoucheurs deliver their children and that a woman had a 'natural right' to have a female midwife deliver their baby. In the second part of this two-part work, Hecquet argues that it is a woman's duty to nurse her infant. He documents the problems of producing milk for nursing and concerns about the health of the mother. Philippe Hecquet was 'M.D. of Reins, 1684, and physician to Port-Royal, 1688-93. . . Hecquet . . . had to enter [the Paris Faculty] as a student in 1694, obtaining the license two years later and the 'bonnet de docteur' in 1697. Contemporary vellum over paste-board (a bit marked). Provenance: contemporary… ownership inscription on the front paste-down. Later Venetian edition, first published in French in 1715. Including a fine map of the world and two maps related to America: "L'America settentrionale." and "L'America Meridionale.". Buffier was "a philosopher, and author, born in Poland, of French parents, 25 May, 1661; died in Paris, 17 May, 1737. "He received his early education at the Jesuit College in Rouen and entered the Society of Jesus in 1679. After teaching literature in Paris, he returned to Rouen to take a chair of theology. Mgr. Colbert, archbishop of that city issued a pastoral recommending to his clergy certain books of Gallican and Jansenistic tendencies. Buffier attacked the pastoral in a pamphlet and having refused to make a retractation journeyed, with the leave of his superiors, to Rome to lay his case before the congregations. Where he easily justified himself and returning to Paris was connected from 1701 to 1731, with the "Journal de Trévoux." He published works on history, asceticism, biography, education, literature, and especially on philosophy. He was not, as is often asserted, a disciple of Descartes, for he rejects altogether methodic doubt and follows in general the scholastics. The Encyclopedists, according to Tabaraud, inserted in their publications, without due credit, entire pages from his books, and Reid, the Scottish metaphysician, acknowledges his great indebtedness to Buffier. "His chief works are: a Life of Count Louis de Sales, Brother of the Saint (Paris, 1708); "Pratique de la mémoire artificielle" (Paris, 1701) often reprinted; Grammaire française sur un plan nouveau (Paris, 1732), in many editions and translations; "Exposition des preuves les plus sensibles de la Vraie Religion" (Paris, 1732); and "Cours des sciences" (Paris, 1722)" (Catholic Encyclopedia online).

For information on Nathaniel Pigott (so spelt), see his entry in the Oxford DNB. Pigott was a friend and adviser of Alexander Pope, who composed the inscription on his memorial tablet. 3pp., folio. Bifolium, on watermarked laid paper, folded into the customary packet, with 'Mr. Hunsdon's Case' written lengthwise on the blank rev…erse of the second leaf. Sixty-lines of neatly and closely written text. The first page is headed 'The Case of Mr. Thomas Hunsdon', and the first part of the document sets this out, in sections dated 23 June 1716, 14 February 1717, 31 October 1719, July 1723, and 1727. With reference to the will of Thomas Green, Hunsdon's father John and his wife Elizabeth, and the Duke of Montagu, the case concerns 'All that Messuage or Tenement then in ye poss[ess]ion of John Lennard his assigns or situate standing & being in Old Southton Buildings in the Parish of St. Andrew Holbourne in the County of Middx Abutting'. Following the setting out of the case, two questions are put to Pigott and he gives his succinct opinion on both, the document ending with his dated signature: 'Nath: Pigot | Middle Temple 9: Novr. 1731'. The two questions are, first: 'Q . . . . . . Whether the said Thos. Hunsdon has not a good Title to the said premisses for the Remr. of the said Term Granted by the said Duke as aforesaid And whether he can't assigne or mortgage the same as he thinks fitt or whether the words Assigne not being in the said Deed of appoinmt. anyways alters the Case'; second, '2dly: . . . . . In Case he mortgages the said premisses Granted by the said Lease wch. are in Middx and the Assignt. or mortgage Deed being Registered Whether there is any Occasion to register the P. Will of Thomas Green Lease from the Duke of Montagu, Deed of appointmt. Or the Said Judt. of the 10th. April therein recited or any and which of them'.

In 4° (24x18,3 cm): due tomi in un volume: (12), XII, 96, XXV, (1) pp. e 168 pp. Elegante legatura anni 30' del XX° secolo in tutta tela foderata con carta a motivi floreali in rosso e verde e fascetta in pelle al dorso con titolo in oro. Esemplare ancora in barbe. Grande marca xilografica dello stampatore Felice Carlo Mosca sul… front. del v. 1 con "Fenice tra le fiamme volta a sinistra verso il sole in cornice figurata con due putti, motto: Semper eadem" disegnata e incisa da Giovanna Pesche. Testatine, iniziali e finalini xilografici. Qualche insignificante macchiolina di foxing in poche pagine, dovute alla qualità della carta napoletana e ma nel complesso in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Seconda edizione, ma prima stampata in Italia, di questa celebre opera del grande medico francese Phileppe Hecquet. L'autore studiò medicina a Parigi e a Remis dove ottenne il titolo di dottore. Dopo aver ottenuto il titolo iniziò a praticare l'arte medica diventando presto celebre ed avendo numerosi clienti fra la grande nobiltà francese ma affiancando anche, a questa attività, una profonda riflessione religiosa che lo portò a passare molto tempo a curare i malati indigenti. Fu anche rettore dell'Università di Parigi. Grande fisiologo e patologo, le sue opere sono considerate come classici nel loro campo. Cercò di dimostrare come le cause delle malattie non fossero da ricercare solo in meri processi fisico-chimici ma anche come l'aspetto psicologico del paziente potesse influenzare la nascita ed il decorso di patologie mediche. Le sue opere rientrano anche nella bibliografia vegetariana in quanto Hecquet fu un acceso sostenitore della dieta vegetariana che considerava molto più salutare e utile di quella a base di carne . Arrivò a teorizzare che il consumo di carne fosse assolutamente non naturale per l'uomo. Quest'opera contiene il punto di vista dell'autore relativo alla fisiologia umana (prima parte) e, nella seconda parte, la descrizione delle cause delle febbri intermittenti e di varie altre patologie, con indicazioni utili alla loro prevenzione, cura con vaire indicazioni dietetiche utili ad aiutare il corpo umano a combattere le malattie. Alla fine della prima parte è presente la celebre descrizione dell'epidemia di peste che colpì la costa meridionale francese della quale, Hecquet fu testimone diretto. Seconda edizione ancora in barbe ed in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione.
