Aggiungi al carrelloFull title - A DISCOURSE CONCERNING FEVERS. IN TWO LETTERS TO A YOUNG PHYSICIAN. THE FIRST, DISSUADING FROM ALL HYPOTHESES AND THEORIES, WHETHER PHYSICAL OR MECHANICAL, AS VAIN AND DELUSIVE. THE SECOND, DIRECTING HIS REGIMEN FOR THE CURE, AND HIS CONDUCT TO THE SICK PERSON; WITH SOME SHORT, BUT GENERAL REMARKS UPON THE PULSE AND URINE, IN THE WAY OF POSTSCRIPT. AS ALSO UPON THE CRISES, AND CRITICAL DAYS IN FEVERS. THE THIRD EDITION, REVIS'D AND IMPROV'D. BY DANIEL TURNER, M.D. OF THE COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS IN LONDON. ***** Needs to be re-cased - sold as is. Revised and improved 3rd edition (preceded by editions published in 1727 and 1732). Collates as [ffep], [frontis], i-xii, 1-364, [rfep], [rp]. Hardcover: H 20cm x L 12.75cm. Missing front board; contemporary leather to spine and rear board; spine with five slightly raised bands but chipped at ends and without title label (although no indication that one was once present); splitting to rear joint but well scuffed and edge-worn rear board remains reasonably firm. With front board missing the first leaf is presumably the ffep (only a rfep at rear without a flyleaf so likely the same at front); small chipping and some tearing to ffep; toning throughout with some stains and soiling. Faded three-line ink ownership inscription at title page's top right perhaps dated 1835 with what looks to be same owner's signature "Wm Molliston[?]" in a more vibrant antiquarian ink inserted among upper center's title lettering. Text block remains firm. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which modestly enhances the book's compromised shelf appearance. Acquired from a modest collection of eighteenth and early nineteenth century legal and medical works from a Columbus, Mississippi estate which had familial roots to the Maryland Eastern Shore and the hamlet of Cambridge in Dorchester County with descent from Maryland U.S. Representative and ambassador William Vans Murray (1760-1803) and/or his nephew William Vans Murray Robertson (1797 or 1799-1836). Cursory online research does not directly connect a William Molliston (if that handwriting deciphering is correct) to Murray or Robertson. However there are land document records in the 1750s and 1820s involving a William Molliston in Kent County, Delaware which does offer geographic proximity to Cambridge. Also Volume VIII of the "Journals of the Continental Congress" note that on Tuesday, August 12, 1777 "William Molliston be appointed a third lieutenant in the service of the United States." None of these records hint at a Molliston affiliated to the medical field which is not a prerequisite for ownership this tome but certainly a probable scenario. Of course there may not be a family descent linkage at all for books enter collections in more paths than lineage alone but this curious genealogical puzzle shall be inherited by the book's next owner.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. 5th or later Edition. Size of the binding: 4 in. x 6 1/4 in., engraved frontispice of a globe, shown in outline, with bands of astrological signs, poles, meridian, horizon, etc., marked; printed title-page. [6]pp., pp. 1-62 + [4]pp. catalogue of books printed for D. Midwinter (many are mathematical or navigational aids). Printed on a thick, high-quality paper, in a large type face, with some typographic or woodcut ornaments. The Description and Use of Collins's Pocket-Quadrant is pp. 51-62. Bound in full, old calf with five raised bands on the spine, remains of a later, hand-labelled (tape) title label: Use of the Globe, remains of sewn headbands, red-sprinkled edges. The front cover is completely detached, with wear to the cover corners, edges and surfaces, the inner front hinge was been formerly strengthened with a leather hinge, a later owner has used a plastic type glue to hold the spine leather together, and an early inked name, date and inscription, and bookplate design has been abraded away at some point (J---? P---? 17--?); a printed, 1926 catalogue slip (possibly for this copy), and a printed bookseller's name & address, have also been pasted to the front flyleaf: Museum Book Store 45, Museum Street, London, W.C. Some age-related tanning to book edges, page margins, and tanning to the frontispiece. Scarce book. This early binding would benefit from restoration. "To the Reader. This short Account of the Globe was Originally design'd for the Use of such Gentlemen as learn Mathematicks of me at Home. But the Course of my Publick Lectures at the Marine Coffee-House in Birchin-Lane, obliging me to proceed next to the Doctrine of the Sphere; and the Books on this Subject already publish'd, being much too large, and filled with Matters very foreign to my Design; I thought it necessary to publish this Short Description and Use of the Globes, that my Auditory there may have the Matter in a much shorter, and yet I hope in as plain a View: For I know of nothing material that is here omitted. The Description and Use of Mr. Collins's Quadrant was occasionn'd by the Request of some Persons who would gladly know the best Uses of it, without being obliged to read over many things which are little to their purpose." Spine with six (6) horizontal bands, manuscript black ink title on one and central gilt ornament in remaining compartments; edges marbled. , Text in Italian. The Italian Ludovico (or Lodovico) Carracci (1555 ? 1619) from Bologna was an early-Baroque painter, etcher, and printmaker whose works create spiritual emotion and are credited with reinvigorating Italian art, especially fresco art, which was subsumed with formalistic Mannerism. His studio . propelled a number of Emilian artists to pre-eminence in Rome and elsewhere, and singularly helped encourage the so-called Bolognese School of the late 16th century, which included Reni, one of the authors of this work. Carracci had his apprentices draw studies focused on observation of nature and natural poses, and use a bold scale in drawing figures. Ludovico's pupils included Giacomo Cavedone, also included in the list of authors of this work., Size : folio (407x272mm)., Illustrated title with printer's device, head- and tailpieces, decorative initials, sixteen (16) full-page copper engravings, including one frontispiece, and four (4) oversized folding plates; depicting frescoes - mural paintings and decorations - painted by Ludovico Carracci and his entourage or artists at S.
