Reads: 'Lord Londonderry presents his compliments to Mr Watson and begs to forward to him a letter and book which he has been requested by Monsieur de Martens to present to His Majesty'. Marginal defects, center fold tears and some light water stains,The Society's Cathedral Series, published from 1795 to 1813, was the first attempt to provide accurate, detailed and measured illustrations of religious houses in England. John… Carter, who was responsible for most, proved outstanding as a draughtsman and vigorously campaigned for the preservation of the buildings. Durham was chosen as 'the most magnificent' construction in the Norman style, and Carter's cross-section was the largest of his drawings to be engraved.Four perspective renderings from English cathedrals. These were commissioned by the Society of Antiquaries of London. They are engraved by James Basire from drawings by John Carter and relate to St Albans, Durham, Exeter, and Gloucester Cathedrals. James Basire (1730-1802) was a member of The Society of Antiquaries of London and specialised in architectural engraving. Works by Basire hang in museums and galleries throughout the world, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the National Portrait Gallery, London In 1772, William Blake was apprenticed to Basire for the term of seven years. For a time Blake considered Basire a rival and a threat to his own remarkable career.
