Some toning, soiling, and staining to edges; light moisture staining to early and late leaves; strong toning to ffep's verso, front flyleaf, rear flyleaf, and rfep's recto; strong foxing to frontispiece's blank recto; frontispiece's tissue guard well toned; mostly occasional light foxing to interior pages with a few scattered stains. With publisher's four page advertising section at rear. Late 19th century green ownership label of "D.M. Montgomery" [Pleasant Ridge, Greene County, Alabama merchant and Civil War veteran David Milton Montgomery, 1841-1899] at center of front pastedown with his pencil signature on opposing front free endpaper recto. Binding is still firm. Double-column text. A good copy. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which modestly enhances exterior appearance and shelf presence. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with discoloration from tape at head of second leaf. Watts's handwriting is not easily legible. The male recipient of the letter is not named. In reply to a letter received the previous Friday, Watts assures him that 'the earnest desire of Mrs. Watts and myself' is 'to promote by every means in our power the comfort and happiness of your daughter, and we are not without hope that we shall succeed in achieving what we wish.' Watts will be in London the following Thursday and Friday, 'and can, without the slightest inconvenience wait upon you in Trafalgar Square at any hour (morning or evening) that you may be the most likely to be disengaged'. He has 'promised to dine with the Royal Marines at Chatham on Saturday'. The letter ends with a discussion of the 'medium of conveyance' for certain 'articles of furniture', with Watts stating, 'I should wish Miss V. to bring any thing of the kind that she may desire to bring. There is not the shadow of an objection'. A line under the signature is illegible. Included with this item is a worn copy of the original engraved portrait of Watts (by Daniel Maclise), captioned 'The Editor of "The Literary Souvenir"', from Fraser's Magazine, June 1835.…
