Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 2nd Edition. "Lights and Shadows of a Pastor's Life" by S. H. Elliott is a novel from Pre-Civil War America - A Christian Inspirational Classic . It was published in New York by Derby & Jackson in 1857. Samuel Hayes Elliott wrote several moral stories purporting to recount the experiences of a Protes…tant minister. People at the time sought to identify the scene and characters of the novel with actual locales and persons in New England and New York State (the author sets part of the story in Saratoga); but it was all fiction. It is possible that much of it was actually inspired by real persons and events, but the book remains a solid fiction. SERIES : Library of Popular Tales (on spine only) TITLE : Lights and Shadows of a Pastor's Life AUTHOR: Samuel Hayes Elliott (1809 - 1869) YEAR : 1857 PLACE : New York IMPRINT : Derby & Jackson EDITION : Second Edition and First Thus ….ie: Copyright was taken out in 1855 and a book was published in 1856 under the title "Dreams and Realities in the Life of a Pastor and Teacher" -- this 1857 book is likely the same book retitled. (The book was probably retitled to avoid identification with hostile critical reviews of the original book. ) STATUS : OP - Out of Print PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Trade hardcover; Has an engraved frontispiece; contains a brief Preface; 439 pages; approximately 4 3/4" x 7 1/4" (12mo); red cloth with title, etc. and decorative embellishments in gold on spine; front and rear boards are treated with a decorative geometric design stamped in blind; pale yellow end-papers CONDITION - GOOD PLUS - BOARDS - Spine extremities are compressed and much frayed, with small loss to cloth -- joints, front and rear are moderately abraded with a small worn spot on front joint; title, etc is still fairly bright; moderate rub and abrasion to boards, with scattered spotting and weathering; corners are bumped with attendant splitting of cloth; text-block edges are toned and spotted . edges have been cleaned. BINDING - Solid. INTERIOR : End-papers are toned, with some edge creasing, small tears and nicking; paper over rear hinge is partially split; small loss of paper to top fore-edge corner of rear free end-paper; a couple of small letters (z) are penciled on rear paste-down - else clean; the Paper throughout the interior is toned and heavily foxed - with scattered spotting and smudging, (but nothing egregious) This is most noticeable, especially, on the leaves approaching the covers. (Black spot shown in the picture is possibly soot deposited from oil lamps). DUST-JACKET - None issued. Engraved Frontispiece (illustratore).

Condizione: Poor. VOLUME II ONLY. Poor condition. Collates as [fp], [ffep], i-iv, 1-314, [rp]. Missing several leaves - probably ffly, rear Appendix C "List of Characters" ends at letter "I" so missing two or three leaves; missing rfly and rfep. Hardcover: H 20cm x L 12.25cm. Contemporary brown cloth rubbed, faded, and soiled/st…ained; spine ends and board corners bumped/frayed; spine's paper title label strongly abraded/chipped with text mostly illegible. Ink ownership inscription dated 1853 at top of ffep; binding shaken between ffep and page i and also at rear hinge; varied foxing throughout. Book is now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids the binding and modestly enhances shelf presence. Pages i-iv feature Lea & Blanchard advertisement for Edgar Allan Poe's "Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque" comprised of thirty personal and editorial opinions sourced from Washington Irving, N.P. Willis, Charles Anthon, numerous newspaper editors, etc. The two volume set "Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque" was published by Lea & Blanchard in 1840 due to the popularity of Poe's short story "The Fall of the House of Usher" which was released in the September 1839 issue of "Burton's Gentleman's Magazine. Lea & Blanchard saw the publication of the short story collection as a gamble on their part and refused to pay royalties with Poe's only compensation being twenty free copies. In an effort to encourage sales, Poe sought the endorsement of Washington Irving and, accordingly, two Irving blurbs appear most prominently on page i. A poor copy and sold as is but with the publisher's ad providing an interesting Poe association.

Couverture rigide. Condizione: Bon. Ernest Alby (Pierre-François dit) (1809-1869) écrivain, L.A.S., sd, 1p in-8 (13 lignes). [109].

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. First Edition. [2 pp, preface by Victor Champier] + [2, Table des Ornements] + 30 chromolithograph plates, all numbered with captions, title printed in red & black, slightly rubbed & soiled cover, small library stamp verso front & lower cover, otherwise copy in very good condition. Limited edition to… 500 copies of which this copy is numbered 220. In mid 19th century, Europe's artistic and fashionable circles were enthralled by a vogue for all that was Oriental. Visitors to London Galleries and Paris salon exhibitions became familiar with Middle Eastern desert and village life, with Arab, Persian and Turkish costume and decorative arts as they were recorded - or sometimes imagined - on canvas or in water- colours by European artist travellers. The French ceramicist Joseph-Théodore Deck was the first to explore and revive Middle Eastern ceramic techniques in the creation of his own unique art. Ceramicist Eugène-Victor Collinot and his collaborator Adalbert de Beaumont, who had first encouraged Deck to look to Islamic prototypes, joined Deck in his early exploration of Islamic ceramics. In 1859, Collinot and Beaumont, themselves collectors of Islamic artefacts, published "Recueil de dessins pour l'art et l'industrie" (A Collection of Designs for Art and Industry), which contained detailed illustrations of Islamic ceramics and glass seen in their travels. This influential design book revealed the arts of the Islamic world as a new source of inspiration to a receptive and enthusiastic audience of French artists and craftsmen. In its pages Deck found a 13th century enamel and gilt glass mosque lamp from Cairo - part of the Rothschild collection - lavishly decorated with ornament and calligraphy. Deck translated the bulbous lamp with its wide-flaring neck into a pair of ceramic vases, replacing its calligraphy with more floral ornament. Likewise, he converted a medieval Syrian glass vase illustrated in the Recueil into a ceramic vase alive with flora and fauna of Persian inspiration. Glazed in white, black, red and cobalt, the vase's swelling, attenuated form is enlivened with acanthus, tiny gazelles and bold interlaced arabesque patterns. In 1863, Collinot and Beaumont founded their own faïence factory specialising in Islamic- inspired wares. Located in the Bois de Boulogne, the factory caused a sensation with its decoration of blue and white Islamic dishes. The competition with Deck was truly on. Collinot and Beaumont both published two other works "Ornements Arabes" (1883). and "Ornements de la Perse" (1880). Bibliographic reference: Creswell 451. #33535.
