Dark aquamarine cloth rubbed with light staining; board corners worn; spine ends frayed; spine's gilt lettering remains bright. Text block edges toned with some staining. Past owner's pencil signature at top of front free endpaper with same owner's "private library" ink stamp appearing ten times from front pastedown inclusive to page 5; six stamps on pages 648 through rear pastedown; more stamps on pages 80, 359, 417, 448, 449, 478, 496 - undoubtedly other stamps present and to be found upon a more careful perusal; margin toning to interior leaves with some foxing and a few stains. Binding shaken between pages 2-3, 64-65, and 496-497 with other lesser stress points - all rather typical as publisher R.H. Henry & Company did not utilize high production standards and copies of this book do not tend to age well. Book is now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids the stressed binding and modestly enhances exterior appearance and shelf presence. A standard late 19th century Mississippi history authored by Confederate Brigadier General Robert Lowry who served as Governor of Mississippi from 1882-1890 and Confederate officer and relentless Reconstruction critic William H. McCardle who served as editor of The Vicksburg Times and Vicksburg Herald newspapers. Dark burgundy cloth rubbed; strong surface scratching to boards with corners worn; small gouge and patch of rippled cloth at rear board's upper left; spine's surface cloth glued down to underlying backstrip with lengthwise tear along surface cloth's rear joint; spine ends frayed/scuffed but with spine's gilt and black stamping still fairly bright. Text block edges toned/foxed and soiled. Modern ink ownership inscriptions on front free endpaper along with maternal birthday missive (October 1948) gifting the book to a daughter on front pastedown; slight toning at interior page margins; occasional light foxing to leaves. One quire slightly pulled but binding remains firm. A good copy of a book reflecting typical condition faults as publisher R.H. Henry & Company unfortunately did not utilize high production standards and copies do not tend to age well. 75 Bll. (einige Blatt entfernt) mit über 70 Zeichnungen. Halblederband der Zeit mit zwei Lederschlaufen als Stifthalter. Qu.-8vo (180 x 118 mm). Hübsches kleines Skizzenbuch mit über 70 teils sehr aufwändigen, filigranen Zeichnungen von einer Reise nach England, die am 6. August 1842 "zwischen Ostende und Dover" begann und den 26-jährigen Achenbach über Portsmouth auf die Isle of Wight führte, wo im August zahlreiche Skizzen entstanden. Zu Achenbachs bevorzugten Motiven zählen vor allem Boote und Schiffe sowie Felsformationen, daneben finden sich aber auch einige Portraits und Landschaftsskizzen, einige Häuser und ein Friedhof. Ein Maler mit Namen Baumann taucht als einzige bezeichnete Figur in leicht karikierter Form zweimal auf: einmal mit ausgebreiteten Armen vor der Inselgruppe "The Needles" stehend ("Des Maler Baumanns Verwunderung über the Needels") und einmal in einer Gastwirtschaft vom Tisch aufspringend ("Harnebai [recte: Herne Bay] den 7. August 1842"). Bis auf drei aquarellierte sind alle Skizzen in Bleistift ausgeführt. - Ecken und Kanten stark bestoßen; innen weitestgehend sauber.…

Eine bäuerliche Alltagsszene, ein Frühwerk Andreas Achenbachs, wie sie seit Ende der dreißiger Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts in Düsseldorf und auch in Frankfurt am Main bei mehreren Malern Mode wurde. Zu nennen sind Jakob Becker (1810-1872), Heinrich von Rustige (1810-1900), Jakob Fürchtegott Dielmann (1809-1885) und Peter Philipp Rumpf (1821-1896). Achenbach begann 1827 seine Ausbildung an der Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf und feierte in den folgenden Jahren seine ersten Erfolge. 1832-1836 war er Schüler von Johann Wilhelm Schirmer (1807-1863), dem er am meisten zu verdanken hat. Vor allem eine Studienreise gemeinsam mit seinem Vater an die Ost- und Nordsee, nach Skandinavien 1832-1833 war für ihn prägend. Sie besuchten die Wasserfälle von Trollhättan und den Wenner- und Wettersee in Schweden. Über Lübeck und Holland kehrten sie im September 1835 nach Düsseldorf zurück. 1836 verließ der junge Maler Düsseldorf aus Protest gegen die Lehrmethoden des Akademiedirektors Wilhelm von Schadow (1788-1862) und schloß sich in München Louis Gurlitt (1812-1867) und Carl Rottmann (1795-1850) an. Noch im selben Jahr zog er nach Frankfurt am Main und erhielt im Städelschen Kunstinstitut ein eigenes Atelier zugewiesen. 1838 kehrte er nach Düsseldorf zurück, richtete ein Atelier ein und unternahm in den folgenden Jahren Reisen nach Holland, Belgien, England und Frankreich, um den Motivvorrat seiner Kunst zu erweitern und in ihr unmittelbar erlebtes Naturgeschehen auszudrücken. 1853 wurde er Ehrenmitglied der Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, 1859 folgte die Ernennung zum Professor an der Düsseldorfer Akademie. Er war Mitglied zahlreicher Akademien und Ehrenbürger der Stadt Düsseldorf. Im Lauf der 1870er Jahre lockerte sich sein Pinselduktus. Routine und Wiederholungen blieben nicht aus; die Vertiefung seiner Kunst in einem Alterswerk blieb ihm versagt. Andreas Achenbach, älterer Bruder von Oswald Achenbach (1827-1905), gilt als der erfolgreichste Düsseldorfer Landschaftsmaler in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts.…
