Contemporary half ro…an over marbled boards, with printed title label to upper board A Regency flower-painting manual from Ackermann's Repository of Arts, preserving the staged method by which students learned to draw, shade, and colour flowers from engraved models. Published during Rudolph Ackermann's most productive period as a publisher of colour-plate books and artistic instruction, Six Progressive Lessons for Flower Painting belongs to the practical drawing-book culture of early nineteenth-century London. Its purpose is explicit: to guide the learner through the drawing and colouring of flowers upon botanical principles, joining ornamental accomplishment with close observation of plant form. Several designs are presented in more than one state, moving from outline or uncoloured impressions to hand-coloured examples. This progressive format allowed the student to compare stages of execution and to understand how form, shading, and colour were built up. The presence of ten hand-coloured plates gives the book the character of both an instructional manual and a pattern book, with the finished examples serving as models for practice. Ackermann was especially well placed to publish such a work. His Repository of Arts at the Strand combined printselling, publishing, drawing instruction, and artists' materials, and his name was closely associated with the refinement of British colour-plate publishing in the Regency period. Manuals of this kind also reflect the period's broader culture of polite education, in which flower painting occupied a respected place among accomplishments taught to young women, while also drawing on the visual discipline of botanical illustration. Provenance: The ownership inscription, dated July 1811, records Henrietta Louisa Shiffner, likely the daughter of George Shiffner of Coombe Place, Sussex, later Sir George Shiffner, 1st Baronet, and Mary Bridger. Born in 1795, she would have been about sixteen when she inscribed the book, placing this copy directly within the educational context for which such drawing manuals were produced. The inscription gives the volume a contemporary female provenance, closely aligned with the subject and use of the book. Not in Abbey, Life.

A dedicated book collector, he is best known to historians for assembling the notable "Manley Sims Collection" of rare books and Etoniana, which he donated to his alma mater, Eton College.Born on June 19th, 1841, at Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, the son of the Rev Frederick Sims, Rector of West Bergholt, Essex, and Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford. He spent his early life in Suffolk, and was educated at Colchester Grammar School. Shortly before he was 16 he was apprenticed to the then well-known practitioner, Thomas Young, of Sackville Street, W, and soon entered as a student at St George's Hospital. Rising very early - at five o'clock every morning - he studied medicine and modern languages before beginning the work of the day with his principal, and was thus able to carry off all the prizes at his hospital, where he was appointed House Surgeon, and afterwards Demonstrator of Physiology. He started practice in Down Street, Mayfair, and in 1870 joined partnership with William Fuller, of 111 Piccadilly, whose niece he married in 1875. In 1884, on the virtual retirement of William Fuller, he was joined in partnership by H Roxburgh Fuller, of Curzon Street, who remained with him to the end.Manley Sims became a most fashionable physician, with probably the largest West-End practice, and his life was one of tireless labour. As of old he rose very early, and was often on his rounds in his brougham before breakfast. He was seldom in bed after 5.30 am, whatever the duties of the previous night had been, and during the whole of this enormously long working day his powers of close attention, accurate insight, and sympathy remained unabated. It is to his credit that he was very helpful and generous to poor patients, and possessing, as he did, the ear of a wealthy and influential clientele, he could often contrive a scheme of assistance in cases of sickness and misery that was practical besides being well meant. To do so was the greatest possible source of pleasure to him. The piece begins: 'The first book containing coloured aquatint illustrations published by the man who made such volumes popular is The Microcosm of London. It came from the Repository of Arts, at 101 Strand: the bookseller-publishers of that day were fond of large-sounding titles for their domed libraries, like the Temple of the Muses or the Juvenile Repository. No. 101 Strand was kept by a very enterprising Saxon, Rudolph Ackermann, who since his arrival in London in the 'nineties of the eighteenth century had been a skilled coach-designer, the proprietor of a drawing school, and a printseller.' While there is no indication of the book of which this was the intended first chapter, nor any record of its publication, it is likely to have been published in some form: Darton's literary output was voluminous, as his entry in the Oxford DNB indicates.
