Condizione: Good. - 18 words penned in black ink on a fragment of a sheet of paper mounted on a piece of slightly heavier paper 4-3/8 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide. Signed "T Cooke". There are tiny scraps of gray paper on the verso of the mount where it has been removed from an album. Good. Cooke informs his correspondent that he is away and will be unable to meet with him until later in the week. Though only a fragment of the note paper is present, the note itself is complete.Musician Thomas Cooke [1782-1848] was born in Dublin. He was appointed musical director of a Dublin theatre at a young age. At the termination of that engagement he sang in English operas and later, after retiring from the stage, he acted as director and composer at Drury Lane and Covent Garden. He was noted for his facility both in composition and singing. At an 1820 benefit, besides singing, he performed solos on nine different instruments. He was also successful as a teacher.

Each letter 1p., 12mo. Both in fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Each in a different secretarial hand, both headed 'R v Corbett'. The first letter reads: 'The accused has been sentenced to 7 years penal servitude. Mr. Lawrence mentioned to the Judge privately the question of postponing sentence but the latter would not adopt the course suggested.' The second reads: 'I will certainly instruct Lawrence as to the circumstance to which you refer so that your application may be made to the Court'. From the Harington papers.

He gives citations in Hansard and elsewhere (the latest dated 11 March 1844) to cases of 'Lord Althorp' and 'Goulburn', concluding: 'I am almost ashamed of referring to my Evidence as authority[.] I only allude to it as giving the clearest & most distinct expression of my opinion'.

An interesting letter, casting light on the activities of trustees during the early days of the National Gallery. In good condition, lightly aged and folded twice, with slight traces of glue from mount on reverse. Dated from 'The Uplands / East Sheen / Saturday'. 1p, 8vo. Eleven lines of text. 'Do look in at the British Gallery in Pall Mall to take another look at Culling Eardleys two Murillos which we visited together a few years back. I should not despair of obtaining them on reasonable terms & I think the purchase for our national Collection would not be a discreditable memorial of the present exhibition / All our Trustees will be in town & we [should easily have?] a good meeting'.

12mo, 1 p. Nine lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Docketed in pencil on reverse 'R. A. Bennett re T. P. O'Connor'. He is enclosing 'the promised note to "T. P". I see that he is ailing and going to the Riviera at an early date, so you had better try and catch him at once.' Bennett had to get the recipient's address from his publishers, as O'Connor left without passing it on.

Hard back binding in original full green leather, five raised bands to the spine with gilt decorations, elaborate gilt tooling to the the front and rear boards, Lipton 'L', gilt dentelles, all page edges, raised silk end papers. 8vo. 9½'' x 7½''. In 1870 Thomas Lipton initially helped his parents run their small shop in the Gorbals. The following year he opened his first provision shop 'Lipton's Market' at 101 Stobcross Street in the Anderston area of Glasgow. This enterprise proved to be successful and Lipton soon established a chain of groceries, first across Glasgow, the rest of Scotland, until finally he had stores throughout Britain. While Lipton was expanding his empire, tea prices were falling and demand was growing among his middle class customers. In 1880, Lipton invested in the young stockyards of Omaha, Nebraska, founding a large packing plant in South Omaha which he sold to American interests in 1887. In 1888, when his empire had grown to 300 stores, he entered the tea trade and opened his tea-tasting office. He started bypassing traditional trading and wholesale distribution channels (most UK tea-trading was focused in London's Mincing Lane) in order to sell teas at unprecedented prices to the untapped poor working class market. In order to provide his shops with goods Lipton bought tea gardens and in doing so, he established the Lipton tea brand, which remains in business as a subsidiary of Unilever. A presentation retirement book to Mr. Scotcher for services rendered to the Lipton brand, who joined the company in 1936 and was presented this book on his retirement in 1951. Hand written in gold and black with lovely hand drawn colour illustrations by R. Barrett. First page reads 'The purposes of this book, Mr. Scotcher, are manifold. It is written to you, and about you, and, it tries to tell you what all of us in the Lipton business feel about you'. In Fine condition. Member of the P.B.F.A. On 4 x 5.5 cm piece of paper. In good condition, laid down on square of paper cut from leaf removed from album. An uncommon signature and an unusual one, consisting of a single line in a series of up and down strokes, diminishing in height, tapering off to the right before returning for the underlining.
