Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. Large Book (775 pages), 1st Printing .Drood is the name and nightmare that obsesses Charles Dickens for the last five years of his life. On June 9, 1865, Dickens and his mistress are secretly returning to London, when their express train hurtles over a gap in a trestle. All of the first-class carriages except the one carrying Dickens are smashed to bits in the valley below. When Dickens descends into that valley to confront the dead and dying, his life will be changed forever. And at the core of that ensuing five-year nightmare is. Drood. the name that Dickens whispers to his friend Wilkie Collins. A laudanum addict and lesser novelist, Collins flouts Victorian sensibilities by living with one mistress while having a child with another, but he may be the only man on earth with whom Dickens can share the secret of. Drood. Increasingly obsessed with crypts, cemeteries, and the precise length of time it would take for a corpse to dissolve in a lime pit, Dickens ceases writing for four years and wanders the worst slums and catacombs of London at night while staging public readings during the day, gruesome readings that leave his audiences horrified. Finally he begins writing what would have been the world's first great mystery masterpiece, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, only to be interrupted forever by. Drood. 12mo, 4 pp. Bifolium. Watermarked 'TOWGOOD'S | SUPER FINE | 1859'. Eighty-seven lines of text. Text clear and complete on aged and grubby paper. With little hope of influencing the editor of Punch, the author feels compelled to 'write and tell you what I and many others think about your Publication and the malignant spite you display towards individuals who happen to incur your wrath'. This 'malignity', he feels, 'must be derived from that murderous old ruffian from whom your publication takes its name, and which alone prevents it being an influential publication. Men laugh at the jokes in it, and admire the skill of Mr. Leech and his assistants, but II have yet to find the Man whose opinions were ever changed by anything he saw in "Punch".' He gives two examples of 'many instances of individuals who have been persecuted' by the magazine: the actor Charles Kean and 'Mr Williams of Lambeth'. What had Kean 'done to incur the wrath of "Punch"? Simply offended one of its staff'. As for Williams, he had stated, 'in a Speech to the Electors of Lambeth [.] that he had been offered a Title which he rejected - now that was nothing but the truth, for you know very well that a Baronetcy really was offered to Mr Williams and rejected'. The author accuses 'Punch' of being 'ready enough to make yourself a mere tool of corruption [.] trying to do that by ridicule which those in power could not do by flattery'. Quotes 'the advice given this day by the "Weekly Dispatch" to the "Saturday Review", before concluding 'You need not make any funny (?) remarks about any grammatical errors that may appear in this letter. If there are any I admit them, for I do not profess to be a Scholar'.…

1p., 8vo. On bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper with a few small closed tears to edges. Addressed on reverse of second leaf, with broken red wax seal, Penny Red stamp and postmarks, to: 'Revd. Dr. Wiseman, | St. Mary's College | Oscott | Nr. Birmingham'. 22 lines of text, closely and neatly written. Daly begins: 'I am sorry to trouble you by laying before you the Letters [not present] of a man of the name of Thomas Male - Bookseller & Bookbinder residing at St. Mary's, who has by representing himself as patronized by you got Credit from me to the Amount of £11 . 9 . 11 - and very shortly after declared himself Insolvent & has taken the benefit of the Act after putting me to some Costs.' He asks Wiseman to 'observe his Letter No. 2 which is in answer to mine requesting a reference as to character - this Letter to me stating that he lived at the Lodge of the College, by the desire of his Lordship, & for the convenience of Father Phelan, quite threw me off my guard, and I made no farther inquiry, but sent the Goods, conceiving that no man could be hardy enough to give such a prompt reference to such Gentlemen if he did not deserve the fullest confidence.' He is not writing to make 'any the most distant claim' on Wiseman: 'I only wish to shew that some how or other your name has been used by this man for, in my opinion, a fraud, & in the hope that you will not suffer this person to act in a similar way again.' He concludes by expressing himself 'fortunate, in escaping as I have done, with so small a loss & no disgrace - for under the full impression of the rectitude of the man I laid two of his Letters before two respectable Booksellers, Messrs. Bickers & Darling, requesting them to send him, if they had them, some of the Catholic Divinity & Catholic Books which he said were for the College, but fortunately for me, they declined sending them.' The BBTI states that Daly traded from before 1832 to 1855, and has him at these two London addresses before Greville Street: 14 Leicester Street, Leicester Square; 19 Red Lion Square. The BBTI also has Thomas Male trading at Duke Street, Birmingham, as bookbinder from before 1834 to after 1835.…
