Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very good. - A partial sheet of the author's letterhead, approximately 3-1/2 inches high by 5-1/4 inches wide with his address printed in raised lettering at the top, is signed in black ink "Warwick Deeping". The letterhead is slightly unevenly cut with remnants of tape on he verso where it has been removed from an a…lbum. Very good. Warwick Deeping [1877-1950] was an English novelist and short-story writer whose best-known novel was "Sorrell and Son" [1925]. After serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I, Deeping gave up his job as a doctor to become a full-time writer. His early work was dominated by historical romances. His later novels more often dealt with modern life and were critical of many tendencies of twentieth century civilization. His attitude was generally one of passionate individualism, distrustful of both ruling elites and the lower classes who were often presented as a threat to his embattled middle-class protagonists. He was one of the best-selling authors of the 1920s and 1930s.

The American novelist, playwright an…d Olympic water polo player Rex Beach (1877-1949) studied law before moving to Alaska at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush. He turned to writing after he was unsuccessful as a prospector basing his stories on his experiences as a prospector. His novel "The Spoilers" was based on his experience with corrupt government officials stealing gold mines from prospectors. Beach's works were inspired by Jack London and, though popular in their day, were also criticized as being simply tales of "strong hairy men doing strong hairy deeds".

In the previous year Yonge had published her historical novel 'Journal of Lady Beatrix Graham', based on the life of the sister of the Great Montrose, and Stuart would appear to open with a jocular reference to this character, rather than to her ancestor the living nine-year-old Lady Beatrice Gra…ham (1863-1932), when he asks Yonge 'to inform Lady Beatrix that if she cares to see a Letter of the Great Marquis recently brought to light among Lord Rollo's papers, she will find a copy of it in the third Report of the Historical MSS Commission just issued - and where a good deal of other curious correspondence is noticed. He explains how to get a copy of the report, adding that the historian Mark Napier has just been with him, 'and is so anxious to see the Letter of Montrose & others of Dundee that he wd. not wait for his own copy of the Report but has carried off mine.' He concludes by describing himself as 'one who has derived so much advantage' from Yonge's writing. At the head of the reverse of the last leaf there is a note, presumably from Yonge to Lady Beatrix, reading 'You will like to see this'.

Having been made Recorder of Hull in 1852, Warren begins his letter from that place: 'Sir, | Some friend has sent to me your paper of Thursday, last, containing a very kindly notice on my late Charge to the G…rand Jury here. - I beg to thank you for that kindness, and also to express my concurrence in your observation on the important legal & Social topics to which that Charge referred.' He is sending, 'as an Evidence of the Salutary effect which that "Charge" produced, a copy of the "Presentment" as we call it, of the Grand Jury, to me, in open Court read by the Foreman.' With the chief magistrate sitting beside him, Warren answered the foreman by stating that after his charge 'the Magistrates had met, & had resolved forthwith to establish a "Reformatory School" for juvenile criminals.' He concludes by stating that he concurs ('ex mio corde') 'in every word of the last section of the article to which I have referred'. In a postscript he states that when he answered the foreman with the news about the reformatory school, 'there began a demonstration of applause in the criminal court which I found it difficult to suppress'.

He says that he does not recall her home address in Wembley, but provides the address of the Westminster Gazette where his brother-in-law, Hiram Pattinson Knight, is employed: "Elle n'a pu m'écrire encore qu'une fois et au crayon, dans son lit. Je n'ai pas oublié la visite que nous vous avons faite, ni l'agréable promenade aux environs de Bognor. Je rentrerai à Paris vers le 10 Juin. Je n'ose espérer que vous soyez encore à Paris. Aggiungi al carrelloThe present item is from the papers of the printer and publisher Richard Bentley (1794-1871), whose career is described in his entry, and that of his business associate Henry Colburn (c.1784-1855), in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. (The pair's partnership had been dissolved in 1832, with Colburn agreeing not to lea…ve the London business to Bentley.) The material clearly consists of a section of the work of Hannah D. Burdon who was the daughter of wealthy Durham mineowner, industrialist and author William Burdon (1764-1818). Her first novel 'Seymour of Sudley' (published in 1836), sent to Bentley for setting up in type. There is a good entry on Burdon on the website 'At the Circulating Library / A Database of Victorian Fiction, 1837-1901'. Fourteen novels are listed, published between 1836 and 1866. Her first eight novels were historical, but following the death of her first husband in 1850, the last six were 'social-problem" novels published under the pseudonym 'Lord B******m' (which has lead some to assume that the books were the work of the Earl of Belfast). The present manuscript is part of the first of her novels, and the only one to be published by Bentley: 'SEYMOUR OF SUDLEY; / OR, / THE LAST OF THE FRANCISCANS. / BY HANNAH D. BURDON. / IN THREE VOLUMES. / VOL. I. [II. III.] / LONDON: / RICHARD BENTLEY, NEW BURLINGTON STREET, / SUCCESSOR TO HENRY COLBURN. / 1836.' The autograph manuscript is unsigned, 30pp, 4to, paginated 27-56, with around 22 to 24 lines to the page, neatly written out on fifteen leaves of wove paper variously watermarked 'S G / 1821', 'G & R TURNER / 1827' and 'R TASSELL / 1828 [1830]'. All the leaves are separate, except for those carrying pp.43-46, which constitute a bifolium. The item is in good condition, lightly aged and worn, with one corner of each of the fifteen leaves dog-eared, and a tiny amount of loss to the corner of the last leaf, resulting in absence of the word 'be' from the bottom left-hand corner of the penultimate page. The bifolium has a closed tear at the foot of the gutter. The matter present in the document comes from the start of the book, and constitutes the conclusion of Chapter II, and the greater part of Chapter III, beginning with the paragraph that starts ''Gradually, as if the warning of the stranger had vanished from his remembrance', which features in the printed version at vol. 1, p.23; and ending with the words 'we are weak creatures, and humility is' at vol.1, p.48. There are notes in pencil (for typesetters?) on: p.2, '25 C Vol. I'; p.3[9] (in pencil), 'Hobhouse'; p.41, 'Byford'; p.47, 'Sherry'; p.48, 'Byford'; p.51, 'Wilcox'. There a couple of dozen sylistic emendations (the most significant being the substitution of 'without interchanging a word' for 'in uninterrupted silence'), but the document is practically a fair copy, although a character named in the manuscript as 'Lord Frederick' is renamed 'Lord Francis' and 'Francis' (as in the published version) throughout.
