Supreme Court judgeships are elected positions in Mississippi and, although candidates run with party affiliations, the campaigns are generally far more low-key and without the political vitriol often seen in gubernatorial and legislative races. Thus political ephemera connected with the state's Supreme Court elections is uncommon. Armis E. Hawkins was elected to two eight-year terms to the Mississippi Supreme Court serving from 1980 to 1995 and was Chief Justice for the Court from 1993 to 1995. Unmentioned among the page 3 rà sumà points are Hawkins's role as John F. Kennedy's state campaign manager during the 1960 presidential campaign (advertising a Kennedy connection would not have been prudent in 1980) and Hawkins's unsuccessful campaign for lieutenant governor in 1959. Hawkins also authored the 1992 Mississippi Supreme Court majority opinion permitting the state to retry Byron de la Beckwith for the 1963 assassination of NAACP Field Secretary Medgar Evers.
