Micha Josef Berdyczewski (Mikhah Yosef Bin-Gorion Berdichevsky)(August 7, 1865 Medzhybizh, western Ukraine, Russian Empire - November 18, 1921 Berlin) was a writer of Hebrew, a journalist, and a scholar. He appealed… for the Jews to change their way of thinking and free themselves from dogmas ruling the Jewish religion, tradition and history, but he is also known for his work with pre-modern Jewish myths and legends. He wrote in Hebrew, Yiddish and German and has been described as "the first Hebrew writer living in Berlin to be revered in the world of German letters." His father was the town Rabbi. In his youth he began to read works from the Jewish Enlightenment, and their influence is noticeable in his works. He was forced to divorce his first wife following her family's objection to his involvement with secular literature. He then moved to the Volozhin Yeshiva, but there too, his pursuit of secular literature stirred anger and objection. One of his earliest publications was about this period of his life, an article titled "Hetzitz V'nifga" (= "peeked and got hurt" = meaning "gone to heresy"), published in 1888 in the newspaper Ha-Melitz. Most of his works from this period were polemic, and his emotional style became his trademark throughout his writing career. In 1890 he went to Germany and Switzerland, studied at the universities of Berlin, Breslau and Bern, and completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree. In this period Berdyczewski studied the works of the Nietzsche and Hegel, and was deeply influenced by them. In the 10 years until his return to Ukraine, he published many articles and stories in Hebrew journals. Up to 1900, the year in which he married Rahel Ramberg, He had published 10 books. Upon his return to Ukraine, he encountered the harsh reality of Jewish life in the Pale of Settlement, and subsequently the subject of many of his stories is the deterioration of the traditional way of life. After a short stay in Warsaw, he returned to Germany in 1911, where he lived until his death in 1921. He is buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Weißensee, Berlin. Berdyczewski adopted the surname Bin-Gorion, first used to sign a collection of his works that he published in Berlin in 1914. His last years were spent in intensive writing and research, collecting Jewish legends and folktales and publishing in Hebrew, Yiddish, and German. After his death, his wife and their son Emanuel Bin-Gorion translated some of his works into German, among them Die Sagen der Juden ("The Legends of the Jews", 1935) and Der Born Judas ("The Well of Judah"), published in six volumes. Berdyczewski's popularity among the Jews of his age is attributed to his success in expressing their ambivalent attitude towards the traditional Jewish world, and to the secular European culture.

Postkartenformate (postalisch nicht verwendet). Eine Karte rückseitig mit handschriftlichen Notizen, die andere mit aufgeklebtem Zeitungsausschnitt zum tragischen Tod des Sängers. M. debutierte 1909 in Lemberg und war nach weiterer Ausbildung in Mailand von 1912-16 an der Wiener Volksoper. Er sang darauf in Wiesbaden, Darmstadt…und seit 1918 an der Berliner Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Während seines Berliner Engagements war ihm ein lukrativer Fünfjahres-Vertrag der New Yorker Metropolitan Opera angeboten worden, wo er den Platz des schwer erkrankten und zurückgetretenen Caruso einnehmen sollte und der der Höhepunkt seiner Karriere geworden wäre. Er bereitete sich bereits auf diese Aufgabe vor und wollte im Oktober 1921 reisen, war vorher aber noch in Berlin für vier Auftritte in "Aida" verpflichtet. Dabei starb er am 5. September beim Verlassen der Bühne nach dem zweiten Akt vor Ort an einem Herzinfarkt. Der Photograph Karl Schenker (um 1890-1954) betrieb ein namhaftes Atelier in Berlin und arbeitete als Bildjournalist, Modephotograph und Portraitist. Einer seiner Mitarbeiter war Mario v. Danach war er an diversen in- und ausländischen Bühnen, u.a. in Tallin (Reval) und am Irving Palace Theatre in New York zu sehen. Um 1908 ließ er sich i…n Berlin nieder und spielte auch am Berliner Theater unter Max Reinhardt. 1912 gründete er eine eigene Filmgesellschaft und war erstmals auf der Leinwand zu sehen. 1913 ging er nach Wien und spielte bis 1919 am Burgtheater. Nach weiteren Filmarbeiten während des Ersten Weltkrieges war er vor seinem frühen Tod zuletzt Direktor und Oberspielleiter des Wiener Renaissance-Theater. Zunächst stellte er in traditioneller Weise Carte-de-visite-Portraits her, wandte sich aber bald der Kunstphotographie zu und begann als Portraitist völlig neue Wege zu gehen, die maßgeblich durch die Kunstphotographen um Alfred Lichtwark und Ernst Juhl beeinflusst wurden. Madame d'Ora (eig. Dora Ph. Kallmus 1881-1963) eröffnete nach ihrer Photographenausbildung durch Nicola Perscheid 1907 zusammen mit Arthur Benda ein Atelier in Wien. Das Studio war mit seinen Portraitaufnahmen der Wiener Künstler- und Intellektuellenszene bald sehr berühmt. Sie war dann mit zunehmendem internationalem Erfolg auch als Modephotographin tätig und unterhielt zudem enge Kontakte zur Wiener Werkstätte. Seit 1925 betrieb sie ein zweites Atelier in Paris, zog 1927 dorthin und übergab ihr Wiener Atelier an Benda, der es alleine weiterführte. Dort baute sie ihren internationalen Ruf weiter aus, arbeitete für große Modehäuser wie Chanel, Rochas u.a., und gilt heute als eine der bedeutendsten österreichischen Photographinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als Jüdin mußte sie nach der deutschen Besetzung von Paris ihr Atelier aufgeben. Sie versteckte sich im unbesetzten Südfrankreich und überlebte, während ihre Schwester, mit der sie in Paris zusammenlebte, und andere Verwandte ermordet wurden. Nach dem Krieg arbeitete sie weiter als Fashionphotographin, in krassem Gegensatz dazu entstand aber auch ihre berühmte Serie von Bildern aus den Pariser Schlachthöfen. 1959 verlor sie bei einem Autounfall ihr Gedächtnis. Carte-de-visite (Albuminabzug) bzw. Photopostkarte (postalisch nicht verwendet), die Carte-de-visite mit blindgeprägter Jahreszahl und aufgeklebtem, gedrucktem Schildchen mit Namen des Dargestellten verso. Die Postkarte mit Namensbezeichnung im Unterrand und einkopiertem Signet der Rotophot und Nr. 7873. Beide Photos tadellos. P…ossart war ursprünglich Buchhändler, wandte sich dann aber der Bühne zu. Er debütierte 1861 in Breslau, spielte dann in Bern, Hamburg und ab 1864 in München. Dort war er ab 1872 auch Regisseur und seit 1878 Schauspieldirektor des Hoftheaters, das er 1887 für einige Zeit verließ um am Lessing-Theater in Berlin zu spielen und auf ausgedehnten Tourneen Gastspiele in Europa und Amerika zu geben. 1892 kam er nach München zurück und wurde 1895 Generalintendant des Hoftheaters. Zu seinen großen Verdiensten zählen der Bau des Münchner Prinz-Regenten-Theaters und die Gründung der Wagner- und Mozart-Festsspiele. Er war einer der größten deutschen Schauspieler des 19. Jahrhunderts und für München von überragender Bedeutung, unter seiner Leitung genoß das Münchner Theater internationalen Ruf. Zu den Photographen des Visite-Bildes konnte ich keine weiteren biographischen Daten finden. Sie betrieben ein sicher namhaftes Atelier in München unter der Firmierung "M. Pössenbacher's Atelier von Lechleitner & Küster" unter derselben Adresse unter der seit 1863 auch schon M(athias) Pössenbacher firmiert hatte und dessen Ateliernachfolger sie wohl waren. Pössenbacher erhielt 1872 unter Ludwig II. den Titel eines Hofphotographen. Die Rothophot AG Berlin war einer der großen und frühen Berliner Postkartenverlage und Vorläufer des für seine Karten von Filmschauspielern hinlänglich bekannten "Ross" Verlages. Die Rotophot wurde 1900 gegründet und hatte Dependancen in ganz Europa, z.B. in London und Budapest. Sie verlegte Postkarten aller Art, u.a. auch eine frühe Reihe mit Bühnenstars, aus der auch vorliegendes Possart-Bildnis stammt.

Postkartenformate (postalisch nicht verwendet). Sehr gut erhalten. Eine Aufnahme von Walden signiert. Walden debütierte 1896 in Karlsruhe und spielte dann ab 1897 am Residenztheater in Berlin. Danach war er an diversen in- und ausländischen Bühnen, u.a. in Tallin (Reval) und am Irving Palace Theatre in New York zu sehen. Um 1908… ließ er sich in Berlin nieder und spielte auch am Berliner Theater unter Max Reinhardt. 1912 gründete er eine eigene Filmgesellschaft und war erstmals auf der Leinwand zu sehen. 1913 ging er nach Wien und spielte bis 1919 am Burgtheater. Nach weiteren Filmarbeiten während des Ersten Weltkrieges war er vor seinem frühen Tod zuletzt Direktor und Oberspielleiter des Wiener Renaissance-Theater. Er war ein Mann von anspruchsvollem Lebensstil und Morphinist. In auswegloser finanzieller Situation, beruflich wie gesundheitlich am Ende, nahm er sich 1921 zusammen mit seiner Familie das Leben. Der Hamburger Photograph R. Dührkoop (1848-1918) war zunächst bei der Eisenbahn und als Kaufmann tätig, bevor er sich in den 1870er-Jahren als Amateur für die Photographie zu interessieren begann und sich autodidaktisch ausbildete. 1882 beantragte er eine gewerbliche Photographenlizenz und eröffnete 1883 er sein erstes Atelier. Bald war er so erfolgreich, daß er seine Tochter Minya (spätere verh. Diez) mitbeschäftigte und ihr später, nachdem er in Berlin ein weiteres Studio eröffnet hatte, die Führung des Hamburger Ateliers überließ. Seine Mitgliedschaft im Deutschen Photographen-Verein und Beiträge in Fachzeitschriften brachten kollegiale Anerkennung. Zunächst stellte er in traditioneller Weise Carte-de-visite-Portraits her, wandte sich aber bald der Kunstphotographie zu und begann als Portraitist völlig neue Wege zu gehen, die maßgeblich durch die Kunstphotographen um Alfred Lichtwark und Ernst Juhl beeinflusst wurden. Er war bald auch international bekannt und Mitglied ausländischer Photographenvereinigungen wie der Royal Photographic Society in London oder des berühmten "Linked Ring". Nach seinem Tod führte seine Tochter die Ateliers bis zu ihrem Tod 1929 weiter. Über die beiden Berliner Photographen Becker und Maass ist wenig bekannt. Beide betrieben Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts eigene Ateliers in Berlin, bevor sie 1902 dort ein gemeinsames Studio gründeten. Micha Josef Berdyczewski (Mikhah Yosef Bin-Gorion Berdichevsky)(August 7, 1865 Medzhybizh, western Ukraine, Russian Empire - November 18, 1921 Berlin) was a writer of Hebrew, a journalist, and a scholar. He appealed for the Jews to c…hange their way of thinking and free themselves from dogmas ruling the Jewish religion, tradition and history, but he is also known for his work with pre-modern Jewish myths and legends. He wrote in Hebrew, Yiddish and German and has been described as "the first Hebrew writer living in Berlin to be revered in the world of German letters." His father was the town Rabbi. In his youth he began to read works from the Jewish Enlightenment, and their influence is noticeable in his works. He was forced to divorce his first wife following her family's objection to his involvement with secular literature. He then moved to the Volozhin Yeshiva, but there too, his pursuit of secular literature stirred anger and objection. One of his earliest publications was about this period of his life, an article titled "Hetzitz V'nifga" (= "peeked and got hurt" = meaning "gone to heresy"), published in 1888 in the newspaper Ha-Melitz. Most of his works from this period were polemic, and his emotional style became his trademark throughout his writing career. In 1890 he went to Germany and Switzerland, studied at the universities of Berlin, Breslau and Bern, and completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree. In this period Berdyczewski studied the works of the Nietzsche and Hegel, and was deeply influenced by them. In the 10 years until his return to Ukraine, he published many articles and stories in Hebrew journals. Up to 1900, the year in which he married Rahel Ramberg, He had published 10 books. Upon his return to Ukraine, he encountered the harsh reality of Jewish life in the Pale of Settlement, and subsequently the subject of many of his stories is the deterioration of the traditional way of life. After a short stay in Warsaw, he returned to Germany in 1911, where he lived until his death in 1921. He is buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Weißensee, Berlin. Berdyczewski adopted the surname Bin-Gorion, first used to sign a collection of his works that he published in Berlin in 1914. His last years were spent in intensive writing and research, collecting Jewish legends and folktales and publishing in Hebrew, Yiddish, and German. After his death, his wife and their son Emanuel Bin-Gorion translated some of his works into German, among them Die Sagen der Juden ("The Legends of the Jews", 1935) and Der Born Judas ("The Well of Judah"), published in six volumes. Berdyczewski's popularity among the Jews of his age is attributed to his success in expressing their ambivalent attitude towards the traditional Jewish world, and to the secular European culture.

Später wandte er sich dem Kompositionsfach zu und veröffentlichte seit 1893 vor allem Opern. Außerdem war er als Theaterkapellmeister in Berlin, Darmstadt,…Coburg-Gotha und schließlich am Kgl. Theater in Hannover beschäftigt. 1908 kehrte er nach Berlin zurück und lebte dort als Komponist, Gesanglehrer und Musikreferent der "Volkszeitung". Er schrieb neben Opern und Operetten (Die Millionenbraut, 1913) auch eine Symphonie sowie zahlreiche Lieder (Saur, DBE).- Übersendet einem "geehrten Herrn" den Entwurf des Anfangs seiner Oper "Grille", begonnen am 15. November 1896.

Die meisten der… im Magazin vertretenen Künstler gehörten der Berliner Secession an. In August 1914, Paul Cassirer Verlag began publishing Kriegszeit, a weekly, four-page broadsheet of artistic responses to World War I. Most of the featured artists were represented by Cassirer and were also affiliated with the Berlin Secession, the progressive exhibiting society that had frequently clashed with imperial art policies. Nevertheless, even these Kriegszeit contributors greeted the war with enthusiasm, and had confidence in the military under Wilhelm II and faith in the righteousness of the German cause. Max Liebermann captured the feelings of unity on his cover for the first issue, depicting a mass surging in support of the Emperor's declaration of war. Ultimately, fifty-one artists contributed 265 lithographs, including portraits of military leaders, scenes of military victories, sanitized images of daily life as a soldier, and caricatures of the enemy. All proceeds benefited an organization supporting destitute artists.].
