Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Here is "The Heart of London" by Walter Jerrold, illustrated by Ernest Haslehust. the book was published by Blackie & Son Ltd., London and Glasgow. Reissue, published circa 1935. So this book has come through the years bearing a somewhat forlorn look, with half of the outer surface of the…spine missing. But the interior , including the pictures, is clean and bright. The color pictures ( twelve plates in all, including frontispiece) were reproduced from the charming water colors of Ernest William Haslehust (1866 - 1949). Haslehust, a prominent member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, was a landscape artist, and illustrator for many books. The pictures in this book glow warmly - it is obvious that Haslehust saw and painted what he loved. This copy of "The Heart of London" is a reprint done years after the success of the original series ("Beautiful England"), and printed circa 1935. The paper used for the cover reflected the paper shortage of the time, due to the world-wide Great Depression. Thus we see a beloved book opened many times - hence the condition of the spine. The picture on the front cover is the same as the frontispiece, but was cropped down to a square format. It is only the spine that mainly bore the brunt of time's wear. SERIES : Beautiful England AUTHOR : Walter Jerrold (1865 - 1929) ILLUSTRATOR : E. W. Haslehust (Ernest William Haslehust, 1866 - 1949) IMPRINT : Blackie and Son Ltd. PLACE : London / Glasgow DATE : No date [but circa 1935] DETAILS : Pictorial hardcover, approx. 6 1/2" x 9"; gray paper-covered boards with color picture affixed to front cover (same as frontispiece, but cropped to a square); printed with a nice large , dark font throughout; contains 12 pictures (reproduced from watercolor by Ernest Haslehust); 64 pages; issued without a dust-jacket. "The Heart of London" by Walter Jerrold, illustrated by Ernest Haslehust. The book was published by Blackie & Son Ltd., London and Glasgow; Blackie & Son (India) Ltd., Bombay; Blackie & Son (Canada) Ltd., Toronto. Undated. Probably mid-1930s; this is a reissue. 9 × 6½ inch, gray paper-covered boards with glazed pictorial paste-down, the cover image being a square crop of the Haslehust frontispiece, "The Heart of London from Tower Bridge". Matte text stock with unbacked plate illustrations on calendered paper. Series advertisement on verso of title page includes the complete London sequence through 'Rambles in Greater London' and ends the 'Beautiful England' list with York. Printer's code D 569 on first page of text. CONDITION -- GOOD ONLY -- This is a previously owned book that shows considerable signs of use (lacks half the spine backing) but which remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERNAL -- The aforementioned spine backing is missing half its length (From bottom up stops just short of the letter 'A'); slight further loss of under-paper at spine extremities, and small loss of mull at bottom extremity; remaining backing is , as would be expected, slightly loose (all this pointing to a GOOD ONLY judgment). Corner edges of boards next to the spine are abraded - (this as a result, accompanying the loss of the spine backing); boards at the front are mildly bumped, and mildly weathered, else they remain clean and presentable with nice color to picture affixed to front. Text-block edges are a bit weathered (top edge has some spotting). BINDING -- Text-block is slightly shaken, but basically solid with no detached leaves. INTERIOR -- End-papers have some production-related foxing and a touch of weathering. Else the interior is clean and presentable. No signatures. No writing or marginalia. E. W. Haselhust (illustratore).
