The questions which will be investigated are first, who supported him in his political career from its beginning, until his recognition by the Senate at the end of December, 69, and, second, why he, in particular, emerged as the restorer of order in the Roman empire. -- It is perhaps superfluous to acknowledge that this study would not have been possible without the Histories and Annals of Tacitus. He became a member of the Georgia Historical Society on July 7, 1886, the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1899 and the Society of American Folklore in the same year.
