Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. Includes 9 essays on Knox's work in addition to the Introduction by Stephen A. Martin as well as numerous illustrations, some in color. The book has sound hinges and does not lean. Pages are clean without toning, creases, marks, stains or wrinkles. Th…ere is a single 1/4" whitish spot on the book's front cover, otherwise the black cloth covers are clean and the gilt lettering on the spine is clean and bright. The upper left corner of the back cover is just slightly blunted at the tip; other cover corners are not bumped. There are a few tiny dents in the top and bottom edges of the book's covers. The book's dust jacket is not soiled but does show a lot of rubbing and light scratches. There is some wear to the jacket's top and bottom edges, but no holes, chips or tears. We will put a clear archival sleeve on the dust jacket to keep it looking good. (Note: Photos may show a flash reflection.) PayPal always welcome. We pack all our books with care and ship in cardboard boxes. Shipment outside of the United States may require extra funds for this large, heavy volume. Additional photos emailed upon request.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition. Entire issue offered. Original wrappers. Very Good. This volume also contains: CASTELLI, Benedetto, 'A Little Known Early Seventeenth Century Treatise on Vision: Bendetto Castelli's Discorso Sopra la Vista (1639, 1669). Translation and Critical Comments by… Piero E. Ariotti' (Pp. 1-30; illus.; pp. 4-18 contain the English translation. 'Castelli's optical investigations were continued in a treatise sent to Giovanni Ciampoli in 1639 and published posthumously in 1669. Included are many observations and conclusions with respect to the persistence of optical images, by which Castelli explained the perception of motion, the illusion of forked tongues in serpents, and other phenomena. In the same treatise he recommended the use of diaphragms in telescopes to impede transverse rays, anticipating Hevelius. HIs discussions of the camera obscura, the inversion of images on the retina, and of cataract (from which Galileo had recently lost his sight), although less novel, are not without interest' (Stillman Drake in D.S.B. III: 116); ARIOTTI, 'Towards Absolute Time: The Undermining and Refutation of the Aristotelian Conception of Time in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries' (31-50); Dennis R. DEAN, 'James Hutton and his Public, 1785-1802' (89-106); H. M. BARKLA, 'Benjamin Robins and the Resistance of Air' (107-122).
