Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book marks a pivotal moment in the development of dye chemistry. Its focus is dyeing as both a practical art and a scientific pursuit, encompassing dyeing techniques used in France's notable tapestry and textile industry in the late 18th century. The author, a renowned chemist, dedicated years to studying dyeing, pigments, and mordants. The book's main topics include the dyeing of wool, silk, cotton, and linen, as well as bleaching and printing fabrics using chemical solutions. Its significance lies in the way it laid the foundations for modern dyeing practices and helped revolutionize the textile industry. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is a beautiful, in-depth exploration of dyeing techniques and their history, with special attention paid to the processes that create black, blue, and red cloth. The author's historical research and expertise in chemistry seamlessly combine to create a text that is both a practical dyeing guide and an analysis of the historical development of dyeing. Through the book, the author provides detailed instructions for dyeing practices that are scientifically sound, while also exploring the complexities of the chemical reactions that create different colors. The book goes beyond simple dye recipes to provide context and insight into the complex developments that led to our current understanding of dyeing, making it a fascinating read for dyers of all skill levels, historians, and anyone interested in the chemistry of color. Aggiungi al carrelloHalf-Leather. Condizione: Very Good. Second Enlarged and Improved. Claude Louis Berthollet's work on the use of chlorine as a bleach led to a reduction from months to days in the time to produce pure white cotton and linen cloths with a consequent large reduction in cost. Prior to this, bleaching was achieved by treating the cloth with a mixture of lime and alkaline salts (ashes), laying out the cloth for weeks in the air and sun, then washing it off with dilute sulphuric acid - and then repeating this whole process until a satisfactory product was achieved. It could take months. The bleaching power of chlorine removed the need to expose the cloth to sun and air for long periods. He produced chlorine from the oxidation of muriatic (hydrochloric) acid and produced the first modern bleaching liquid by passing chlorine gas through a solution of sodium carbonate to produce sodium hypochlorite. He later produced potassium chlorate, a much stronger bleach. The revolutionary results of Berthollet's experiments were first published in 1791 in his "Elements de l'Art de la Teinture"; "The first modern book on dyeing and the first general theory of its principles, systematic research and chemical explanations". (Edelstein). In 1804 Berthollet, with the collaboration of his son Amedee (A.B.), published a second edition which included many important modifications and additions. In 1824 the Scottish chemist Andrew Ure published this English translation of that second edition, appending his own notes and additional illustrative plates. It includes details of the newest research on dyeing and dyestuffs, particularly the discoveries of J. B. Vitalis which appeared in his "Cours Elementaire de Teinture" [Paris, 1823]. In addition, the plates contributed by Ure depict some of the newest machinery used in the best English dyeing establishments of the time. It includes a table for converting French weights and measures into the English equivalents (Vol 2, pp 451-453). Two volumes, including two Plates by Berthollet, both folding, and seven additional Plates by Ure, two folding. Vol 1: (xviii), including Table of Contents, an explanation of all the Plates, 408pp plus Berthollet's Plates; Vol 2: (i-vi) including Table of Contents, 453pp plus Ure's Plates. Berthollet was a man of many parts. He was: a friend of Napoleon, going with him to Egypt; a collaborator with Lavoisier on a system of chemical nomenclature; Director and inspector of dyeworks at the Royal Gobelin tapestry and carpet Manufactory at Jouay in Paris; Vice-President of the French Senate in 1804; a member of the French Academy of Science and a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in London. A previous owner's name in pencil on the title page of each volume. Some early pencilled notes on a half-page following the Plates in Vol 1. Rebound in half-calf with marbled boards. Gilt titles and decoration on the spines. Slight browning throughout. Otherwise VERY GOOD. One of Edelstein's "Thirteen Key Books in the History of Dyeing and Finishing Published Before 1856". Book 0101 in Ron: Bibliotheca Tinctoria.
