Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover, viii + 339 pages, numerous b&w photos and facsimiles in text, NOT ex-library. Book is clean and bright, untanned, with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Minor light handling wear only. Bright, untorn, unclipped dust jacket. -- Born in France shortly after the First World War, Arthur Derrick Penley Edwards spent his early years amid the lingering upheaval of post-war Europe, witnessing the arrival of radio, motor cars, aeroplanes and great ocean liners, and the consequences of the financial crash. In 1938 Edwards began his own theatrical career at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where his ancestors had performed in the early 1800s alongside Edmund Kean and William Barrymore. The war interrupted in 1940, when he was called to serve in the Royal Navy. His early naval career centred on RDF (radar), and upon receiving his commission in 1941 he was tasked with establishing the first training school for RDF operators. He subsequently served on Russian convoys as a navigating officer on the destroyer Eclipse and aboard an aircraft carrier during the North African landings. A chance meeting led him to the Bristol Old Vic at its founding in 1946, and from there to the London Old Vic and a tour of Australia and New Zealand with a company headed by Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. In 1951 he made an unexpected shift to the City of London, working first in general insurance, then credit insurance, export finance and foreign exchange, eventually becoming a noted financial practitioner and author devoting himself to training exporters and importers in the use of foreign currencies and advocating for the creation of an Export Bank.…
