Buschbeck. Wij waren dadelijk ingenomen met den substantieelen inhoud, den helderen historischen opzet, en getroffen door de densiteit van dien gids in een Museum dat overweldigt door zijn schatten uit de bijzonderste vreemde schilderscholen. Het werk van Dr Buschbeck is in zijn aard een model. Ook deed het voorbeeld van een zoo practisch manuaal bij ons de hoop ontstaan om aan de bezoekers van het Koninklijk Museum te Antwerpen een overzichtelijk historisch handboek aan te bieden. Werd ons voornemen niet seffens gerealiseerd, dan hebben wij ten minste deze voldoening dat ons werk intusschen quantitatief gewonnen heeft door de aanwervingen der laatste jaren. Aan andere voorbeelden is in den vreemde geen gebrek. Men kent het werk van Sir Charles Holmes, over de National Gallery te Londen, dat zeer degelijk is, maar de drie deelen zijn moeilijk in het Museum te hanteeren voor den bezoeker. Sommige auteurs verkiezen de enumeratieve methode, die haar voordeel heeft, maar die weinig verschilt van een catalogus; zoo kon in den practischen Guide du Louvre, door Louis Hourticq, het historisch overzicht niet tot zijn recht komen wegens de enorme hoeveelheid werken en de verscheidenheid der afdeelingen. Enkelen hebben den vorm van het essay gebezigd, Raffaëlli in zijn Promenades au Louvre, Eugenio d'Ors in Tres Horas en el Museo del Prado. Doch waarom naar den vreemde gaan? Van de hand van onzen betreurden Collega H. Fierens-Gevaert zijn er twee voortreffelijke historische gidsen, die van 1922, voor het Museum van Brugge, die van 1923, voor dat van Brussel. Ook ons Museum werd door Conservator Pol de Mont beschreven in zijn album van 1914, dat destijds kon voldoen, doch dat thans door zijn beknoptheid de huidige eischen moeielijk kan bevredigen. Dank zij de uitbreiding der kunststudie, wordt de aandacht steeds meer op de oude meesters gespitst. Daarvan zijn ook in het Museum te Antwerpen gelukkige teekenen te bemerken, die toe te schrijven zijn, vooreerst, aan het feit dat de Vlaamsche School er schitterend is gerepresenteerd; ook de schikking der schilderijen voldoet over 't algemeen den toeschouwer; en wellicht hebben de sedert meer dan tien jaar georganiseerde z.g. groote voordrachten (om niet te spreken van de jarenlange diffusie door wandelcauseries) bijgedragen tot de artistieke vorming van het publiek en tot de ontwikkeling van het historisch kunstbegrip. Wij hebben de verwezenlijking van ons plan niet langer willen uitstellen. Wij hebben er vooral naar gestreefd den bezoeker een overzicht der Vlaamsche Kunst in handen te geven, dat gaat van de XIVe tot de XVIIIe eeuw, en dat als 't ware het nut kan hebben van een catalogus, zonder de dorheid van een alphabetisch inventaris. Wij hebben gepoogd elk werk in zijn atmosfeer en historisch verband te situeeren; op die wijze kan de bezoeker gemakkelijk de ontwikkeling volgen der Vlaamsche schilderschool die het hoofdbestanddeel van het Koninklijk Museum uitmaakt. In elk historisch tijdvak worden, met inachtneming der tijdsorde, achtereenvolgens het altaarstuk, het portret, het landschap, het genre, het stilleven bestudeerd, en geïllustreerd door de schilderijen van ons Museum. Feitelijk was ons eerste plan bescheidener: wij hadden onder meer dan vijfhonderd schilderijen gerust een keuze kunnen doen. Toen wij echter aanvingen met de beschrijving van van Ertborn-verzameling, beseften wij onmiddellijk dat daar geen enkel schilderij kon worden uitgeschakeld. Wij besloten dus ons werk zoo volledig mogelijk te maken, ? het Museum van Antwerpen verdient immers iets beters dan een vlugge wandeling? Op enkele uitzonderingen na (schilderijen in het depot wegens hun minderwaardigheid of dubieuze echtheid) is elk werk de studie waard, en kan het den bezoeker iets leeren. Dan blijft er nog wat een Engelsch auteur genoemd heeft the gentle art of attribution. Behalve onmisbare aanwijzingen, hebben wij vermeden nadruk te leggen op schooltwisten over toeschrijvingen, zij hebben slechts belang voor kunsthistorici. Evenwel was een ernstige herziening van de attributies noodzakelijk; zulks was het geval voor menig schilderij der XVIe eeuw en der Hollandsche School. Met diepe erkentelijkheid brengen wij hulde aan de belanglooze en gulle medewerking van twee eminente geleerden, Dr Walter Cohen, Eere-Conservator der Gemäldegalerie van Dusseldorf en Dr H. Schneider, Directeur van het Rijksbureau voor Historische en Iconographische Documentatie te 's-Gravenhage; zij hebben zich geen moeite gespaard om ons met raad en daad bij te staan. Ook zijn wij nuttige inlichtingen verschuldigd aan de H.H. Dr Ludwig von Baldass, Dr Ludwig Burchard, Dr K. Zoege von Manteuffel en Prof. Edouard Michel. Aan allen bieden wij onzen warmen dank. Wat nu de illustraties betreft, voor deze zijn wij afgeweken van de gebruikelijke methode, door de reproductie van overbekende werken te vermijden. Daarom hebben wij ook verkozen details te nemen in groote werken van Q. Metsys en van Rubens, waarvan de totale reproductie nooit voldoet. Voor het overige zal men in dit boek ook minder gevulgariseerde schilderijen aantreffen. Het werk is afgesloten op 31 December 1938. Mochten wij nog een wensch formuleeren, dan is het dat er genoeg oude meesters worden aangeworven om in de toekomst een vermeerderde uitgave te rechtvaardigen. A. H. C.
