Bevor er 1947 gemeinsam mit Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour und William Vandivert MAGNUM Photos gründete, arbeitete er als Kriegsberichterstatter für das Life- Magazin in 61 Ländern. In London schoss er während der deutschen Luftangriffe Fotos, die emblematisch für The Blitz wurden. Bei der Befreiung des Konzentrationslagers Bergen-Belsen machte er die ersten Bilder und wandte daraufhin der Kriegsfotografie den Rücken zu. In den folgenden Jahren reiste er 28 000 Meilen kreuz und quer durch Afrika und den Vorderen Orient.
