In dit proefschrift probeert hij antwoord te geven op de vraag welke relaties er bestaan tussen de marktgerichtheid van ondernemingen en de toepassing van informatietechnologie. Molenaar geeft een overzicht van de ontwikkeling die marketing en informatietechnologie in de afgelopen decennia door hebben gemaakt en hoe IT de opvattingen over marketing heeft beïnvloed. Van een middel om efficiënt te kunnen werken, ontwikkelde de IT zich snel naar een fase waarbij informatie gebruikt wordt om doelgroepen te bereiken en tot persoonlijk contact met de klant te komen. Naarmate de IT zich verder ontwikkelde, kon de klantvriendelijkheid van ondernemingen steeds verder toenemen. De volgende stap is volgens Molenaar een fase waarbij sprake is van klantparticipatie en interactie. Informatiesystemen worden hierbij geïntegreerd met bijv. telecommunicatiesystemen en Internet.
