Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. In the French Language. First impression of the first edition bound from the original parts, complete in one volume. Illustrated throughout with steel-engravings including steel-engraved frontispiece showing portrait of Jules Claretie and double-page 'Plan de… la Ville et des Fortifications de Strasbourg' pages 294-5. ***Very good in colour marbled half leather boards with gilt decorative bordered leather spine, green leather gilt title label and blind tooled borders to leather edges. Contemporaneous steel-engraved small black and white armorial bookplate to front paste-down. Edges and corners of boards rubbed and slightly bumped. Head of spine rubbed and nicked. Brown front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns. Front free endpaper has light long crease. Prelims and rear pages foxed. Edges of text-block foxed. Interior pages clean. Spine tight. 796 pages. Livre Premiere [242], Livre Second [340], Livre Troisieme [214] - 281mm x 208mm. ***The Paris Commune was a radical socialist and revolutionary government that ruled Paris from 18 March to 28 May 1871. Following the defeat of Emperor Napoleon III in September 1870, the French Second Empire swiftly collapsed. In its stead rose a Third Republic at war with Prussia, which laid siege to Paris for four months. A hotbed of working-class radicalism, France's capital was primarily defended during this time by the often politicized and radical troops of the National Guard rather than regular Army troops. In February 1871 Adolphe Thiers, the new chief executive of the French national government, signed an armistice with Prussia that disarmed the Army but not the National Guard. ***Soldiers of the Commune's National Guard killed two French army generals, and the Commune refused to accept the authority of the French government. The regular French Army suppressed the Commune during "La semaine sanglante" ("The Bloody Week") beginning on 21 May 1871. ***Debates over the policies and outcome of the Commune had significant influence on the ideas of Karl Marx, who described it as an example of the "dictatorship of the proletariat" [Wiki] ***First edition complete in one volume taken from original parts, copiously illustrated. Of interest to historians researching the French Revolution of 1870-1 and collectors of antiquarian books. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. MM Blanchard, Crepon, Darjou, Ferat, Fichot, Gaildrau, Gilbert, Godefroy-Durand, Janet-Lange, Gustave Janet, M. Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. L'Ancienne France: L'Armée depuis le Moyen Âge jusqu'à la Révolution - Illustrated First Edition in Rare Prize Binding (1887) Author: Lacroix, Paul (Bibliophile Jacob) Publisher: Librairie de Firmin-Didot et Cie, Paris (Typography by Firmin-Didot, Mesnil, Eure), Publication Year: 1887 Fi…rst Edition, Binding: Hardcover - Custom Prize Binding (Dark Green Cloth with Gilt Embossing) Pages: viii + 288 Illustrations: 165 engravings (woodcuts, vignettes, and full-page plates) plus one vibrant chromolithograph frontispiece. Condition: Good - Exhibits typical age-related patina with scattered water stains and page waviness from historical exposure (likely late 19th-century storage conditions); no significant tears, losses, heavy foxing, or mold; binding remains firm and intact with minor scuffing, edge wear, and fading to extremities; gilt lettering and emblem on cover and spine retain brightness, enhancing shelf appeal. Description: Offered here is a captivating first edition of "L'Armée depuis le Moyen Âge jusqu'à la Révolution," a cornerstone volume in Paul Lacroix's esteemed "L'Ancienne France" series. Paul Lacroix (1806-1884), better known by his pseudonym "Bibliophile Jacob," was a renowned French author, journalist, bibliographer, and historian whose prolific output—spanning over 200 works—focused on the rich tapestry of medieval and early modern French life. Drawing from his extensive research and primary sources, this book compiles and expands upon his earlier studies to deliver a comprehensive, illustrated exploration of the French military's development from the feudal chaos of the Middle Ages through the structured reforms of the Enlightenment era, culminating just before the 1789 Revolution. Visually stunning, the volume boasts 165 intricate engravings—ranging from detailed woodcuts of armored knights and battle scenes to vignettes of historical figures and equipment—plus a striking chromolithograph that brings chromatic vibrancy to the frontispiece. These illustrations, sourced from contemporary manuscripts and artworks, not only enhance the text but also provide a window into the aesthetic and technological advancements of the periods covered, making the book a delight for art historians as well. What elevates this copy to collector's status is its bespoke prize binding, presented by the Ville de Paris (City of Paris) as a "Prix Municipal de Gymnastique" (Municipal Gymnastics Prize). In the late 19th century, during the French Third Republic, such awards were often bestowed in educational or civic contexts to promote physical fitness and national pride, echoing the era's emphasis on discipline and health—ironically tying into the book's military themes of training and endurance. The dark green cloth cover features the city's heraldic coat of arms embossed in gold at the center, flanked by the motto "République Française - Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité" at the top and the prize inscription below. The spine is similarly gilt-lettered with "L'Ancienne France - L'Armée," adding elegance and historical provenance that links it to Parisian municipal history. Internally, the book shows honest signs of its 137-year age:, occasional spotting, and the aforementioned water damage causing stains and gentle rippling across numerous pages (impacting aesthetics but not legibility; text and images remain sharp and fully accessible). No ownership inscriptions, bookplates, or library stamps are present, preserving its clean pedigree. The hinges are tight, pages secure, and overall structure robust—ideal for careful reading, research, or as a display piece in a curated library. This edition is scarce in trade, particularly with such a distinctive binding, which adds a layer of rarity and storytelling value. A true gem for antiquarian collectors seeking depth, beauty, and context, for enthusiasts of French Republican ephemera, custom bindings, or thematic ties between gymnastics and military history. Achille Jubinal, A. Morel-Fatio, Robert Fleury, Philippoteaux (illustratore).
