The Historical Thesaurus made it possible for the first time to trace the evolution of not just a word (as in the OED) but of a meaning or concept. A ''firework display'' whose ''mere existence is a blessing'' (Islon 243, 260), the Historical Thesaurus ''presents meanings in chronological order, noting when terms first appeared, often when they disappeared, or whether they were one-shots, lovely doomed coinages such as "moonling".
