Binding of leather spine, covered in cloth strip, over marbled boards in reasonably good condition with two old sticker marks to front board, "seed trial dept" stamp to front board and rubbing to both boards. Inside coloured frontis in good condition with a few small marks, all other pages in excellent clean and bright condition with tape repair to margins of pages iv and v. The Mangel Wurzel or the Rhineland was also known as Dick Ruben (the Great Turnip), Dick Wurzel (the Great Root) and Mangel Wurzel. A mistranslation had changed the original German "mangold wurzel" or "root of the beet", into "mangel wurzel", meaning "scarcity root". It might, indeed, be called the Root of Abundance", due to its ability to thrive in harsh conditions and produce a large crop. In his monograph, de Commerell remarks, "it deserves to obtain a decided preference over all other roots, and even over turnips". A nice copy of a scarce book.…

Rare édition, non répertoriée, absente du Catalogue collectif de France. Les bibliographies spécialisées et le catalogue de la BnF recensent pour 1786 trois éditions de cet ouvrage, toutes à adresse parisienne ou messine, et dont aucune ne correspond à la présente. La seule édition connue à 15 pages est une édition abrégée publiée à Paris par l'Imprimerie royale en 1788. Provenance : Les deux ex-libris encollés sur le premier contre-plat ? grand format (116 × 74 mm) et petit format (40 × 40 mm), tous deux indiqués par Germaine Meyer-Noirel dans son Répertoire général des ex-libris français (n° C 1779 et C 2154) ? sont ceux de Paul Couturier de Royas (Vienne, 1853 ? La Tronche, 1934), l'un des plus grands bibliophiles du Dauphiné. Sa démarche bibliophilique est clairement guidée par le souci de l'exhaustivité, alliant l'intérêt propre de l'ouvrage avec la qualité des exemplaires. La présence de cet exemplaire dans sa bibliothèque s'explique aisément : imprimé à Grenoble, il relevait à la fois de son intérêt pour l'histoire et la production intellectuelle du Dauphiné, et de sa recherche systématique des éditions provinciales. La présence du grand et du petit ex-libris sur un même exemplaire est caractéristique de cette collection, qui demeura dans la descendance jusqu'à sa dispersion dans les années 1970. Dos très légèrement insolé, sinon bel exemplaire de cette rare édition grenobloise. L'abbé de Commerell (mort en 1799), agronome d'origine allemande, aumônier de la princesse de L?wenstein et correspondant de la Société royale des sciences et des arts de Metz, fit connaître en France les avantages de la betterave champêtre ? variété fourragère de la Beta vulgaris, cultivée alors exclusivement en Allemagne pour la nourriture des bestiaux.
