Samue…l Abraham Goudschmidt (* 11. Juli 1902 in Den Haag, Niederlande; ? 4. Dezember 1978 in Reno, Nevada, USA) war ein US-amerikanischer Physiker niederländischer Herkunft. In den USA wurde der Nachname später in Samuel Goudsmit geändert. Neben verschiedenen Arbeiten zur Atom- und Kernphysik postulierte er 1925 noch als Student in Leiden gemeinsam mit George Eugene Uhlenbeck die Existenz des Elektronenspins. 1927 promovierte er in Leiden und war ab 1927 Associate Professor und ab 1932 Professor an der University of Michigan. Nach dem Krieg war er 1946 bis 1948 Professor an der Northwestern University und ging dann 1948 als Senior Scientist an das Brookhaven National Laboratory, wo er bis zu seiner Pensionierung 1970 blieb. Er hielt unter anderem Vorlesungen an der New School for Social Research in New York City (1948 bis 1951), am United States Navy Bureau of Ships (1949 bis 1959), dem Rockefeller Institute (1957 bis 1974) und 1975 bis 1978 an der University of Nevada in Reno. Goudschmidt war im Zweiten Weltkrieg 1941 bis 1946 am Radiation Laboratory des Massachusetts Institute of Technology und gegen Ende des Krieges als leitender Wissenschaftler bei der Alsos-Mission, worüber er auch ein Buch schrieb. Er nahm in Hechingen die Gruppe um Werner Heisenberg gefangen und brachte sie anschließend nach Farm Hall in England, wobei er den Franzosen (mit dem französischen Physiker Yves Rocard) zuvorkam. In seinem Buch führte er das Versagen der Gruppe deutscher Kernphysiker um Heisenberg beim deutschen Kernwaffenprojekt auf wissenschaftliches Versagen zurück, was nicht unwidersprochen blieb. 1951 bis 1966 war er geschäftsführender Herausgeber (Managing Editor) von Physical Review und 1958 bis 1978 Herausgeber von Physical Review Letters. 1976 erhielt er die National Medal of Science. Er erhielt 1925 zusammen mit Gustav Hertz den Nobelpreis. Franck ist vor allem wegen des Franck-Hertz-Versuchs zur Bestätigung der Quantentheorie und des Franck-Reports bekannt. In letzterem versuchte er den Präsidenten der USA vom Einsatz der Atombombe im Krieg gegen Japan abzubringen. Geboren in Deutschland als Sohn des jüdischen Bankkaufmanns Jacob Franck und seiner Ehefrau Rebecka Decker, wuchs Franck in Hamburg auf, wo er am Wilhelm-Gymnasium 1902 seine Reifeprüfung ablegte. Anschließend studierte er kurz an der Universität Heidelberg Chemie, dann in Berlin unter anderem bei Paul Drude und Emil Warburg Physik, wo er 1906 bei Warburg seinen Doktortitel erlangte. Er war danach Assistent in Frankfurt am Main und kurz danach in Berlin bei Heinrich Rubens, ab 1911 Privatdozent und ab 1916 außerordentlicher Professor. In Chicago arbeitete er nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg vornehmlich auf dem Gebiet der Photosynthese und erhielt hierfür 1955 den Rumford-Preis der American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Februar 1967 in Princeton, New Jersey) war ein amerikanischer theoretischer Physiker deutsch-jüdischer Abstammung, der vor allem während des Zweiten Weltkriegs für seine Rolle als wissenschaftlicher Leiter des Manhattan-Projekts bekannt wurde. Dieses im geheim gehaltenen Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico stationierte Projekt hatte zum Ziel, die ersten Nuklearwaffen zu entwickeln. Robert Oppenheimer gilt als ?Vater der Atombombe?, verurteilte jedoch ihren weiteren Einsatz, nachdem er die Folgen ihres Einsatzes gegen die japanischen Städte Hiroshima und Nagasaki gesehen hatte. Albert Einstein (* 14. März 1879 in Ulm; ? 18. April 1955 in Princeton, New Jersey) war ein theoretischer Physiker. Seine Forschungen zur Struktur von Materie, Raum und Zeit sowie dem Wesen der Gravitation veränderten maßgeblich das physikalische Weltbild. Er gilt daher als einer der größten Physiker aller Zeiten. Einsteins Hauptwerk, die Relativitätstheorie, machte ihn weltberühmt. Im Jahr 1905 erschien seine Arbeit mit dem Titel Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter Körper, deren Inhalt heute als spezielle Relativitätstheorie bezeichnet wird. 1915 publizierte Einstein die allgemeine Relativitätstheorie. Auch zur Quantenphysik leistete er wesentliche Beiträge. ?Für seine Verdienste um die theoretische Physik, besonders für seine Entdeckung des Gesetzes des photoelektrischen Effekts? erhielt er 1922 den Nobelpreis. Er lieferte Pionierarbeiten auf dem Gebiet der Massenspektrometrie. Seine Arbeiten an der Harvard University führten 1938 zu der Publikation der relativen Häufigkeiten der Isotope des Elements Uran. In den 1940er Jahren arbeitete er am Manhattan Project mit. Samuel Abraham Goudschmidt (* 11. Juli 1902 in Den Haag, Niederlande; ? 4. Dezember 1978 in Reno, Nevada, USA) war ein US-amerikanischer Physiker niederländischer Herkunft. In den USA wurde der Nachname später in Samuel Goudsmit geändert. Neben verschiedenen Arbeiten zur Atom- und Kernphysik postulierte er 1925 noch als Student in Leiden gemeinsam mit George Eugene Uhlenbeck die Existenz des Elektronenspins. 1927 promovierte er in Leiden und war ab 1927 Associate Professor und ab 1932 Professor an der University of Michigan. Goudschmidt war im Zweiten Weltkrieg 1941 bis 1946 am Radiation Laboratory des Massachusetts Institute of Technology und gegen Ende des Krieges als leitender Wissenschaftler bei der Alsos-Mission, worüber er auch ein Buch schrieb. Er nahm in Hechingen die Gruppe um Werner Heisenberg gefangen und brachte sie anschließend nach Farm Hall in England, wobei er den Franzosen (mit dem französischen Physiker Yves Rocard) zuvorkam.
