Bright,… untorn dust jacket. -- The Gniezno Doors (Polish: Drzwi Gnieznienskie) are a pair of bronze doors at the entrance to Gniezno Cathedral in Poland, a Gothic building which the doors pre-date, having been carried over from an earlier building. They are decorated with eighteen scenes in bas-relief from the life of St. Adalbert (or Wojciech in Polish), whose remains had been bought for their weight in gold (shown in scene 16), and carried back to the cathedral, and set up in a shrine there. Vorrangig geht es darum, die 'Danziger Malerei' als prägenden Faktor im kulturellen Erscheinungsbild der Stadt zu betrachten, zugleich aber ihre Eigenart und ihre Entwicklungsdynamik im breiteren stadtgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang zu verstehen. Für Danzig erfordert eine Annäherung an diese Aufgabe eine Überprüfung der methodologischen Prämissen, die typisch für die traditionelle Kunstgeographie sind. Das Hauptinteresse dieser Disziplin galt der Form des Kunstwerkes, das von einem in der Region verwurzelten Künstler hervorgebracht wurde. Unter den Beständen der Marienkirche, die heute fast das gesamte malerische Erbe des spätmittelalterlichen Danzigs enthält, gibt es Werke von unterschiedlicher Herkunft, und zwar aus Danzig, Lübeck, vom Niederrhein, aus Köln und den Niederlanden. Danzig stellt damit den Grenzfall eines offenen und heterogenen Kunstzentrums dar. Im Hinblick auf den obigen Sachverhalt, wird die Rolle des Künstlers bei der Gestaltung eines Kunstzentrums ebenso wie der Stiftungs- und Rezeptionskontext der Kunstwerke, d. h. Auftraggeber und Rezipienten erörtert.
