Aggiungi al carrelloWraps. Condizione: Good. [4], 190, [2] pages. Illustrations. Formulae. References. Probably an ex-library copy as received stamp on front cover and some information blacked out on front cover. Staples and staple holes at top of front cover. Sticker residue at top of front cover. These articles were from the Russian Atomnye varyv…y v mirnykh tseluakh, Atomizdat, Moscow 1970. The contents include: Industrial Uses of Underground Nuclear Explosions; Mechanical Effects of single and multiple underground nuclear cratering explosions and the properties of the excavations dug by them; Influence of the Physical and Mechanical Properties of the rock on the mechanical effect of an underground nuclear explosion (as found from model experiments); Spread of underground-nuclear-explosion radioactive products over long distances; escape into the atmosphere of inert radioactive gases, and formation from them of secondary aerosols, in an uncontained underground nuclear explosion; Model for calculating the fallout of a heavy nonuniform contaminant forma volume source in a wind that varies with Altitude; and Radioactive contamination of the Atmosphere and ground by single and multiple underground nuclear cratering explosions. Peaceful nuclear explosions (PNEs) are nuclear explosions conducted for non-military purposes. Proposed uses include excavation for the building of canals and harbors, electrical generation, the use of nuclear explosions to drive spacecraft, and as a form of wide-area fracking. PNEs were an area of some research from the late 1950s into the 1980s, primarily in the United States and Soviet Union. In the U.S., a series of tests were carried out under Project Plowshare. Some of the ideas considered included blasting a new Panama Canal, constructing the proposed Nicaragua Canal, the use of underground explosions to create electricity (project PACER), and a variety of mining, geological, and radionuclide studies. The largest of the excavation tests was carried out in the Sedan nuclear test in 1962, which released large amounts of radioactive gas into the air. By the late 1960s, public opposition to Plowshare was increasing, and a 1970s study of the economics of the concepts suggested they had no practical use. Plowshare saw decreasing interest from the 1960s, and was officially canceled in 1977. The Soviet program started a few years after the U.S. efforts and explored many of the same concepts under their Nuclear Explosions for the National Economy program. The program was more extensive, eventually conducting 239 nuclear explosions. Some of these tests also released radioactivity, including a significant release of plutonium into the groundwater and the polluting of an area near the Volga River. A major part of the program in the 1970s and 80s was the use of very small bombs to produce shock waves as a seismic measuring tool, and as part of these experiments, two bombs were successfully used to seal blown-out oil wells. The program officially ended in 1988. As part of ongoing arms control efforts, both programs came to be controlled by a variety of agreements. Most notable among these is the 1976 Treaty on Underground Nuclear Explosions for Peaceful Purposes (PNE Treaty). The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty of 1996 prohibits all nuclear explosions, regardless of whether they are for peaceful purposes or not. Since that time the topic has been raised several times, often as a method of asteroid impact avoidance. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 leaves, xii, [13]-250 pp; 34 text figures. Binding: green cloth with leather spine label (see photo). I know there is a publisher's binding of brown cloth, with gilt stamping on the spine. I believe the binding of this copy--a green cloth with a leather spine label--is also a publ…isher's binding. I am aware of two other copies with a binding like the copy offered here, one of which is inscribed by Emmet as is this copy. Institutional ink stamp on title page and on p. 101. Foxed. Very Good. First Edition. INSCRIBED BY THOMAS EMMET TO DR. PABLO MARTINEZ DE [sic] RIO: "Pablo Martinez de [sic] Rio M.D.,/ with the regards of the Author/ Jan 9th 1869" (see photo). Garrison-Morton 6058: "A comprehensive and valuable account of the management of vesico-vaginal fistula based on Sims's technique." Rutkow, The History of Surgery in the United States, Vol. I, GY13 and Fig. 106. Norman 706. ABOUT THE RECIPIENT OF THIS COPY, José Pablo Martínez del Río (Emmet misspells it "de Rio"). Here are excerpts from Wikipedia: "José Pablo Martínez del Río (1809-1882), was a wealthy obstetrician physician native to Panama. Born into a very wealthy family, he studied literature in the United Kingdom and medicine in Paris where he received his doctorate in 1834. He traveled to Mexico where, starting in 1836, Martínez began to serve at the Academy of Medicine and from 1838 he worked as a professor of obstetrics. Between 1839 and 1844 he remains in Paris. Upon his return to Mexico, and from 1848 to 1851 he is a professor of Obstetrics. In 1864, he leads the group that offers Emperor Maximilian I the throne of Mexico. Simultaneously, while Martínez traveled to Turkey and Greece on behalf of Maximilian I, the armies of Benito Juárez triumphed in Mexico. When Maximiliano I is defeated in 1867, Martínez del Río loses all his properties and goes into exile in Italy. From abroad he asked Juárez several times to pardon him, but only in 1870, when the general amnesty was promulgated, did he manage to return. Thanks to the management of American diplomats he manages to recover some properties. In 1881 he was taken to the state of Chihuahua to be appointed Political Chief of Paso del Norte. Upon his return to Mexico, he returned to practice medicine, being appointed vice president of the National Academy of Medicine.". Signed by Author(s).
