The book opens with the British scrambling to defend Burma, gateway to India, after Japanâs onslaught on Hong Kong, Borneo, Malaya and Singapore. Within weeks of Japan attacking Burma in December 1941, its capital, Rangoon, was lost and Britain was forced to look to Indiaâs defences. Despite a punishing monsoon climate and inhospitable jungle terrain, the British grimly held on to north-east India after the loss of Burma, and even made plans to hit back. The book looks at the controversial early campaigns of the Chindits, the guerrilla force conceived by the maverick and eccentric General Orde Wingate, a favourite oif Churchillâs, and features two more conventional Generals who fell foul of the Prime Minister - Archibald Wavell and Claude Auchinleck. Supported by 33 appendices, 15 main maps and 20 sketch maps; the book is illustrated by 35 photographs.

Above all, on the ground Allied armies stemmed Japanâs attacks on Arakan and Assam, and decisively defeated them at the battles of Kohima and Imphal. There are good representative collections in Western museums, but very few items can be given a precise, or even an approximate, date on firm evidence. Since the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, random looting of tombs, the source of most early ceramics in Western collections, had been stopped, and the Chinese authorities have carried out many important controlled excavations. A small proportion of the early objects was revealed in "The Genious of China", an exhibition shown in London and Paris in 1973-74, and carefully prepared articles on the archaeological and art-historical work have been published in Chinese periodicals. However, much of the important evidence still awaits publication. The author of this book had exceptional opportunities to visit provincial museums and art-historical research institutes in China in the years 1972 to 1975. He took notes and photographs of exhibits to which a precise, or reasonably close, date can be given on good evidence. This important material is published here for the first time in the West. The book is arranged in chronological order with the author's comments beneats each object. Additional material includes a map of China showing major tomb sites and a chronological index. This scholarly work presents an exciting and vital contribution towards establishing the chronology of Chinese ceramics.

In two parts: the first with the descriptions of the objects; the second a series of photographic plates, the majority in black and white with some examples in colour. A clean bright copy, unmarked, blue cloth bound with gilt lettering to spine, some very slight fading to the top and bottom of the covers front and back. Dust jacket complete and clean, no tears or marks, light shelf-wear with some scuffing to the corners and top edge.
