Dark maroon boards slightly bowed with mild mottling; scuffing at spine ends and along joints as well as at boards' fore-edge corners and along bottom edges. Slight interior foxing and soiling. Binding is firm. An uncommon guidebook for post-war Germany. First three unnumbered leaves are an "Explanatory Inclosure," "Errata Sheet," and map the British, French, American, and Russian divisions of occupied Germany. B/w photos throughout. Prepared to serve as a guide to Germany for US servicemen's families but published by the Army to be a memento of the Occupation phase. Rear colophon specifies publication date of January 1947 but Errata updates information into May 1947.

Hard Cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Red cloth with gilt lettering on teh spine, with blindstamped decorated borders and coat of arms of the Crown at the centre of both front and rear boards. Marbled endpapers. xxv, 389 pages. illustrated with 48 diagrammatic plates many in both red and black ink. The cloth of the book and the top edge are a bit dust soiled, with a few stains, and a touch of wear to one corner of the spine, plus a repair to the cloth at the side of the spine. Gilt lettering bright. Corners turned inwards. Inside the binding is sound with intact hinges, there is a armorial bookplate "Cromarty" with the moto "Dread God" to the front pastedown and original owner's name in ink at the head of the title page. pages all very clean thoughout, all complete and in good order, all plates present. A good sound copy.

He writes "Sir, Should yr R.H. not go to the play on Saturday may I request that your box at Covent Garden for Lady Torrens." The writer identified in ink in an early hand at upper margin. traces of mounting to blank.

Regarding their previous correspondence, Calvert has 'directions to request' Ridge to inform him, 'if you are aware of any Steps having been taken, for conveying back the Clothing for M: General Wattevelle's [sic] Regiment, from Sicily to Cadiz - where that Corps is now stationed'. From Cadiz the Watteville's Regiment would be transferred to Upper Canada, where it would take part in the War of 1812.

The collection, deriving from the Ewart family papers, is in good condition, on aged paper, with fraying to the extremities of the report. Sir John Spencer Ewart, son of General Sir John Alexander Ewart, Colonel of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, entered Sandhurst in 1880, and left the following year, with the sword of honour, to join the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. (For more information about Ewart and his father, who also obtained 'special distinction' at Sandhurst, see their entries in the Oxford DNB.) ONE. Manuscript 'Report'. Unsigned, but in Ewart's hand, and with the accompanying map (Item Two, below) docketed with his name. Written on a printed 'W[ar]. O[ffice]. Form 33. | Road Report' form, on one side of a piece of grey paper roughly 34 x 40 cm. It describes three locations - Yorktown, Watchetts and Frimley - under six columns: Places on or near the Road; Distances in Miles and Furlongs (subdivided into Intermediate and Total); Population (subdivided into Houses and Persons); Accommodation | On a March (subdivided into Men and Horses; Supplies, Transport and Water; and General Observations. Among the details are the number of bakers, butchers, waggons, carts, horses oxen and tons of hay, and the observations give the details of th suitability of the locations as defensive positions. TWO. Map (30 x 30.5 cm) attached to Item One, and furled up with it, with 'Ewart' in pencil at head. In ink and colours, to a scale of six inches to the mile, with Frimley at foot and 'York Town' at head. THREE to SIX. Four more field plans, each with 'Ewart' in the top left-hand corner. Each 31 cm square and in black and white (two with roads picked out in brown). Comprising: 'Eye Sketch' of the Midrow Hill area, and 'Night Fd.
