Das Antlitz einer Zwangsgemeinschaft, das als Pionierwerk der Zeitgeschichte bis heute ein Standardwerk ist" (Wikipedia) dieses Buch ist die Fortsetzung des Standardwerkes "In 241 bisher unveröffentlichten Dokumenten und Bildern ? jeweils mit wissenschaftlicher Sorgfalt knapp kommentiert und erläutert ? wird das einmalige Phänomen Theresienstadt mit kritischer Sonde bis in manche letzte, historisch wie soziologisch aufschlußreiche Einzelheit erschlossen. Die dem jüdischen ?Vorzugslager" von den nationalsozialistischen Machthabern zugedachte Rolle, die Öffentlichkeit des In- und Auslandes über die wahren Ziele der sogenannten ?Endlösung der Judenfrage", der systematischen Vernichtung des jüdischen Volkes, zu täuschen, tritt dabei deutlich ins Licht. Die nüchterne Sprache amtlicher Dokumente, die tragische Widersinnigkeit von Anordnungen, Stellungnahmen und Berichten der jüdischen Selbstverwaltung und die Zeugnisse leidend Betroffener, die sich hier in zahlreichen neuen Quellen darbieten, erweitern mit neuen Zügen unsere Kenntnis sowohl der Zwangsgemeinschaft Theresienstadt als auch der Tragödie des jüdischen Volkes während des zweiten Weltkrieges. So verbinden sich beide Bände zu einer Einheit, die Weite und Umfang der berührten Probleme zu erfassen ermöglicht. Im einzelnen werden in dem Dokumentenband vor allem untersucht die Vorbereitungen des Lagers, die Technik der Massendeportation und ihre materielle Ausbeutung (bei der die Gestapo die Finanzämter übervorteilt), der Aufbau des Lagers in seiner Entwicklung und in seinen wichtigsten Institutionen, schließlich der jahrelange Kampf um die Verheimlichung und Enthüllung der Wahrheit über Theresienstadt, als dessen Repräsentanten u. a. das Reichssicherheitshauptamt und das Internationale Rote Kreuz auftreten, während die Gefangenen selbst als erfindungsreiche Statisten für das Gelingen eines großzügigen Täuschungsmanövers wirken müssen."
