Stephen enlisted in England in 1915, gained a commission in the R.F.A. (Royal Field Artillery), went to France after six weeks training and remained there until he was killed in action in March 1918 at Zillebeke. He saw a great deal of fighting and served with distinction, having been mentioned in despatches and awarded the Croix de Guerre avec palm and the Military Cross for actions at the Somme and Passchendaele respectively.
