Pieter Bruegel de Oude (ca. 1525 - 1569) is vandaag vooral bekend om zijn voorstellingen van het boerenleven en wintertaferelen. Hiervan bezitten de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van Belgie twee uitzonderlijke voorbeelden, het Winterlandschap met schaatsers en vogelknip (1565) en de Volkstelling te Bethlehem (1566). Het Winterlandschap met schaatsers en vogelknip is Bruegels meest gekopieerde werk; het werd nageschilderd door zijn zonen Pieter de Jonge en Jan de Oude en inspireerde kunstenaars tot aan het einde van 17de eeuw. Dit boek presenteert diepgaand onderzoek en nieuwe inzichten over de wintertaferelen van Pieter Bruegel de Oude, met focus op de panelen in de KMSKB. ISBN 9789069660813. De grondslagen van de huidige beurs zijn terug te vinden in de Noord-Italiaanse steden tijdens de late middeleeuwen. Daar ontwikkelden zich de grote basisconcepten van het moderne bank- en beurswezen voor het eerst (bijvoorbeeld de wisselbrief, de vennootschapsvorm en het bankwezen met giraal geld). Via Brugge introduceerden de Italianen deze concepten ook in Noordwest-Europa. De stad speelde van begin af aan een cruciale rol in het ontstaan van de handelsbeurs. Door het verval van de jaarmarkten van Champagne en hogere transportkosten zochten de Italianen via Brugge een andere weg naar Noord-Europa. Brugge werd in de veertiende eeuw een belangrijke schakel tussen twee grote handelsimperia: het Middellandse Zeegebied met de Italianen en het gebied rond de Baltische Zee met de Duitse Hanze. Hoewel de handel in Brugge volop floreerde, waren de meeste Bruggelingen er zelf niet actief bij betrokken. De Brugse herbergiers speelden wel een belangrijke, indirecte rol. Zij waren de bemiddelaars tussen de verschillende vreemde kooplieden en brachten ze in contact met elkaar. Zij voorzagen de kooplieden dus niet alleen van onderdak, stockageplaatsen en maaltijden, maar namen ook een makelaarsrol op zich. Omdat er toen nog geen offici le beurscouranten waren, verzamelden zij informatie over de lokale economie en de toestand van de buitenlandse markten voor, en via, hun rondreizende gasten. Gezien zijn centrale rol voor de handel was de herbergier n van de meest gerespecteerde beroepen van de stad. E n van de belangrijkste herbergiersfamilies was de Brugse familie Van der Buerse. Zij baatten vijf generaties lang de herberg 'Ter Buerse' uit. De oudste vermeldingen van de familie dateren uit de dertiende eeuw. Al in 1285 baatte Robrecht Van der Buerse de herberg uit. In de loop van de veertiende eeuw ontwikkelde het pleintje voor de herberg Ter Buerse zich tot h t commerci le en financi le centrum van de stad. 3160 g.
