Aggiungi al carrelloVery good. Bears University of California Library Stamp, from which it was deaccessioned, in margin. Blank on verso. Size 13.5 x 16 Inches. This is a scarce and beautiful 1837 Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge or S.D.U.K. map of parts of Egypt and Tripoli, Libya on the Barbary Coast of Northern Africa. It covers from Al Bayda in Libya east as far as Alexandria, Egypt. The map names numerous tribes throughout, and offers other interesting cartographic annotations. Dry rivers, lakes, oases, tracks, ruins, mountains and other topography is also noted, with relief shown by hachure. This map was prepared in the declining days of the Ottoman Empire. After the conquest of Palestine by Muhammad Ali's Egypt in 1832, British intervention returned control of Palestine to the Ottoman rulers in 1840. In Egypt, following the expulsion of the Napoleonic forces by the Ottoman Mamluk Turks, Muhammad Ali, the Ottoman viceroy of Egypt, established the Mamluk Dynasty that would rule Egypt until the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. Between 1820 and 1833, Ali annexed northern Sudan, Syria and parts of Arabia into the Mamluk Empire. This map was originally published by Baldwin and Cradock and copyrighted in 1837, but was issued in Volume two of Chapman and Hall's 1844 edition of Maps of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge . It was engraved by John Walker of J. and C. Walker. References: Rumsey 0890.116. Phillips (Atlases) 794.…

Aggiungi al carrelloVery good. Minor foxing and overall toning. Minor edge wear. Size 15.5 x 13 Inches. A fine example of S. A. MitchellÂ's 1849 map of Egypt. Centered on the Nile Valley, Mitchell's map covers all of Egypt from the Mediterranean to Nubia, as well as the adjacent Sinai, and parts of the Red Sea and Palestine. Below the title area in the upper right quadrant there are translations of some of the Arabic terms used to describe geographical features. An inset in the lower left continues the course of the Nile as it comes through the speculative and only partially explored Nubia. The sites of numerous ancient ruins and monuments are noted as are contemporary cities. Political and topographical features are noted and color coded with elevation rendered by hachure. The whole is engraved and colored in Mitchell's distinctive style with green border work and vivid pastels. Mitchell published this chart in his atlas from 1846 to the late 1850s before discontinuing the series and selling his map plates to DeSilver. This map was issued in the 1849 edition of the New Universal Atlas . It was the last edition of that atlas to be published by Mitchell prior to selling the plates and rights to the atlas to Thomas Cowperthwait in 1850. References: Rumsey 0545.074.…

Aggiungi al carrelloVery good. Minor toning along original centerfold. Minor spotting at places. Original platemark visible. Minor overall toning. Size 15 x 21 Inches. This is a desirable 1786 map of northern Africa by French cartographer Louis Brion de la Tour. It covers the northern portion of Africa from the Maghreb or Barbary Coast south as far as Gabon. Like most maps of Africa from this period, the whole is rife with speculation. The White Nile flows south into the Ptolemaic Mountains of the Moon. According to Ptolemy, the Mountains of the Moon lay near two great lakes that were source of the White Nile. Today some regard this range and its lakes as speculative, but more likely it represents Ptolemy's very real knowledge of Lake Victoria and the Rwenzori Mountains. A beautifully engraved title cartouche adorns the top right quadrant of the map. To the left and right of the map are paste downs of French text with remarks and description of the map. Surrounding the whole is an elaborate decorative border featuring floral arrangements, surveying tools, elaborate baroque scalloping, and a winged globe. This map was issued as plate no. 46 in the most deluxe edition of Desnos' 1786 Atlas General Methodique et Elementaire, Pour l'Etude de la Geographie et de l'Histoire Moderne .
