A fine cameo portrait of a Japanese woman in costume from Simoda (Shimoda) on the southeastern Izu peninsula, after a daguerrotype by Eliphalet Brown, and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life.…
