Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Jacket after Pablo Picasso (illustratore). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with full number line. Some minuscule edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, slight yellowing to page block, not price clipped (£15.99), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy, looks unread. 274pp. A stirring account of the town that inspired one of the world's most celebrated and controversial works of art, the painting Guernica's profound impact on the politics and culture of the 20th century, and the artist whose passion and artistic vision are unequaled in modern history. On April 26th 1937 the German Luftwaffe began relentless bombing and machine gunning of businesses, homes and villages to test a new type of warfare waged from the air, at the request of General Francisco Franco and his rebel forces. Three and a half hours later, the village lay in ruins, its population decimated. This act of terror and unspeakable cruelty, the first intentional, large scale attack against a nonmilitary target in modern warfare, outraged the world and compelled a Spanish painter to respond with artistic fury. Pablo Picasso, an expatriate living in Paris, reacted immediately to the devastation in his homeland by beginning work on the canvas that would become his testament against the horrors of war. Weaving themes of conflict and redemption, doom and transcendence, and featuring some of the century's most memorable and infamous figures, Martin follows this renowned masterwork from its creation through its journey across decades, from many countries of Europe to America and finally and triumphantly to Spain. 'Picasso's War' is a book that vividly demonstrates how vital art is to human lives and how sometimes it even transfigures tragedy, a story that delivers an unforgettable portrait of an artistic genius whose visionary rendering of the terrible wounds of war still resonates profoundly today.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Jacket after Pablo Picasso (illustratore). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with '001' on copyright page. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very very slightly bruised, some very slight yellowing to page block, not price clipped (£20.00), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 365pp, illustrated. The real revolution in the arts first took place not, as is commonly supposed, in the 1920s to the accompaniment of the Charleston, black jazz and mint juleps, but more quietly and intimately, in the shadow of the windmills, artificial and real, and in the cafes and cabarets of Montmartre during the first decade of the century. The cross fertilization of painting, writing, music and dance produced a panorama of activity characterized by the early works of Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck and Modigliani, the appearance of the Ballet Russe and the salons of Gertrude Stein. 'In Montmartre' is the fascinating story of the birth of Modernism in Paris. Full of life, colour and squalor, and incredible painting and sculpture, Sue Roe vividly brings to life the bohemian Parisian art scene between 1900-1910. Quite a scarce book.

No Binding. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. Publisher: Editions Cercle D'Art, Paris, France. Date: 1962. First edition. Printed in Germany. Linocut size: H: 16.6cm W: 22.3cm. Sheet size: H: 26.8cm W: 32.4cm. Original linocut after and approved by Picasso for 'Picasso Linogravures', 1962. These linocuts were first issued in signed editions of fifty by Galerie Louise Leiris and printed by Arnéra. Because of the 'reduction' method invented and used by Picasso, which uses just one plate of linoleum instead of a separate one for each colour, it was impossible to make any more prints from the original plates. Therefore, in collaboration with Picasso and Galerie Louise Leiris, new linoleum plates were made at 42% of the original size, and it was from these that the above prints were made. Ref: Bloch 909. (Later editions of this work, the editions of 1988 and 2020, were digitally copied without any impression marks, used lesser quality inks, on inferior paper and greatly reduced in quality.) This is a genuine linocut, dating from 1962 on heavy stock paper. Condition: Strong impression mark. Very faint foxing to the margins else a fine, tight, bright, clean copy. Scarce.

No Binding. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. Publisher: Editions Cercle D'Art, Paris, France. Date: 1962. First edition. Printed in Germany. Linocut size: H: 26.8cm W: 32.4cm. Sheet size: H: 31.7cm W: 37.4cm. Original linocut after and approved by Picasso for 'Picasso Linogravures'', 1962. (Later editions of this work, the editions of 1988 and 2020, were digitally copied without any impression marks, used lesser quality inks, on inferior paper and greatly reduced in quality.) This is a genuine linocut, dating from 1962, on heavy stock paper. Condition: Strong impression mark. Very faint foxing to the margins else a fine, tight, bright, clean copy. Scarce.

Condizione: Fine. This striking aquatint engraving is from the work after Pablo Picasso and Georges Louis Leclerc comte de Buffon entitled "Eaux-Fortes Originales pour des Textes de Buffon". The work was published in Paris by Martin Fabiani in 1942. This is from number 59 of a total edition of 226 with this being one of the 55 special printings on và lin de Montval. The aquatints were printed by Roger Lacourià re after original art by Pablo Picasso. --- "The Buffon is one of the greatest bestiaries of the 20th century. Picasso began these etchings in 1936 (he had promised them to Vollard, who died before their completion; Fabiani was one of Vollard's associates). It appears that the artist executed them rapidly, and with the utmost freedom. The master printer Lacourià re had introduced Picasso, as well as Rouault and other artists, to the lift-ground or sugar aquatint process, which allowed a variety of tones and textures within a limited range. The spontaneity of the plates is attested by the freehand margins, the rapidly drawn line, and the use of fingerprints for textural variety." (Garvey, The Artist & the Book, 231) --- This aquatint is an artistic and wonderful interpretation after Pablo Picasso created from Buffon's work. Buffon's work became one of the most informative sources as far as the visual appearance of animals, and was highly understandable for a wide audience. Buffon described his work and love for natural history by stating that, "Natural history embraces all the objects the universe presents to us. This prodigious multitude of quadrupeds, birds, fish, insects, plants, minerals, etc., offers to the curiosity of the human mind a vast spectacle, of which the whole is so great that the details are inexhaustible." --- Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and theater designer.
