Mario Bunge is a philosopher of great repute, whose enormous output includes dozens of books in several languages, which will culminate with his Treatise on Basic Philosophy projected in seven volumes, four of which have already appeared [Reidel, I 974ff. ]. He is known for his works on research methods, the foundations of physics, biology, the social sciences, the diverse applications of mathematical methods and of systems analysis, and more. Bunge stands for exact philosophy, classical liberal social philosophy, rationalism and enlightenment. He is brave, even relentless, in his attacks on subjectivism, mentalism, and spiritualism, as well as on positivism, mechanism, and dialectics. He believes in logic and clarity, in science and open-mindedness - not as the philosopher's equivalent to the poli_ tician's rhetoric of motherhood and apple pie, but as a matter of everyday practice, as qualities to cultivate daily in our pursuit of the life worth living. Bunge's philosophy often has the quality of Columbus's egg, and he is prone to come to swift and decisive conclusions on the basis of argu_ ments which seem to him valid; he will not be perturbed by the fact that most of the advanced thinkers in the field hold different views. An excellent set of historical public relations and fundraising photographs documenting the impact of the wave of Chinese refugees into Hong Kong in the 1960's, and the efforts of the Lutheran World Relief and Lutheran World Federation agencies to provide vital support in cooperation with the Hong Kong British Crown entities, as a result of manmade climate disaster. The graphic large photographs capture detrimental living conditions and squalor; LWS [Lutheran World Services] medical clinics treating patients; the mobile dental clinics operating on young Chinese children; Chinese refugee students studying with free board and lodging, learning English, and even cooking classes. Others capture young Chinese women in tailoring classes, young Chinese men in electrical engineering classes, along with LWS providing farm relief, loaning small amounts to repair roofs of huts, and noodle factory.Also documented are the impact of 1000's of Chinese sampans and junks in Hong Kong harbor providing minimal temporary housing; families living in tiny temporary basements, closets, along with food distribution. The Hong Kong Public Services photos capture young Chinese children in rooftop schools; aftermath of a typhoon flooding; Hong Kong fire department rescue from burning tenement; and British Hong Kong doctors servicing Hakka Chinese peoples. Besides education and training, the Hong Kong Medical Department together with the LWS and LWF provided public school hygiene programs, malaria control, tuberculosis control, vaccinations, sexually transmitted diseases, together with water shortages, and much more. Following World War II, and the aftermath of the Chinese Civil War, and finally the disastrous Great Leap Forward famines, Hong Kong absorbed over 1.5 million Chinese refugees, as well as transformed from a port city prior to World War II, to a manufacturing and commercial hub during the Mid-20th-Century.…
