One of the defining collaborations of twentieth-century American literature and photography, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men grew from Agee and Evans' 1936 assignment to document the lives of Southern tenant farmers. First published in 1941 to limited commercial response, the book achieved its lasting reputation after Agee's death and was reissued by Houghton Mifflin in 1960. That edition was not simply a textual reprint: Walker Evans reconsidered and substantially expanded the photographic component, doubling the original portfolio from 31 photographs to 62. The book's remarkable organization is especially worth noting. Evans' photographs occupy a self-contained sequence before the reader reaches the title and copyright pages. Portraits of the tenant families, their children, homes, interiors, possessions, and surroundings are therefore encountered before Agee's prose supplies names, interpretation, or narrative. This was fundamental to the conception of the work: Agee described photographs and text as mutually independent, collaborative elements rather than treating Evans' photographs as conventional illustrations. The photographs are followed by a leaf acknowledging their reproduction through the courtesy of the Farm Security Administration, United States Department of Agriculture, further connecting the volume with the institutional history of Depression-era documentary photography. This copy belongs to the 1960 revised and expanded Houghton Mifflin edition, 471 pages. It is not a 1960 first printing. Black cloth remains unusually clean and handsome, with strong silver spine lettering and only modest wear at spine ends and extremities. Boards remain square, binding is firm, and the photographic plates and text are clean and well preserved. No ownership markings or annotations. Dust Jacket: Very Good-. Original gray jacket remains substantially complete, with edge rubbing, small chips and short tears at the spine ends and corners, scattered surface marks, and creasing and closed tearing particularly along the lower rear panel. Typography remains strong and the important photographic portraits of Agee and Evans on the rear panel are intact. The jacket significantly improves both the appearance and collectibility of this later printing. One of the most sophisticated aspects of Let Us Now Praise Famous Men is something easily missed when encountering the book only through its title: Evans gets the first word without using any words at all. By putting the photographic portfolio ahead of the ordinary title and copyright matter, the book temporarily withholds even the apparatus that normally tells us what we are looking at. The reader first confronts faces, rooms, weathered boards, clothing, beds, children, and household objects as visual evidence. Only afterward does Agee's extraordinarily dense prose begin interpreting the same world. The book shattered journalistic and literary conventions. The origins of Agee and Evan's famous collaboration date back to an assignment for Fortune magazine, which sent them to Alabama in the summer of 1936 to report a story that was never published. James Rufus Agee (November 27, 1909 - May 16, 1955) was an American novelist, journalist, poet, screenwriter and film critic. In the 1940s, writing for Time, he was one of the most influential film critics in the United States. His autobiographical novel, A Death in the Family won the author a posthumous 1958 Pulitzer Prize. Agee is also known as a co-writer of the book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men and as the screenwriter of the film classics The African Queen and The Night of the Hunter. Walker Evans (November 3, 1903 - April 10, 1975) was an American photographer and photojournalist best known for his work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) documenting the effects of the Great Depression. He said that his goal was to make pictures that are "literate, authoritative, transcendent". His works are in the permanent collections of major museums and have been the subject of retrospectives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the George Eastman Museum. In the summer of 1936 the business magazine Fortune operated by Henry Luce dispatched staff writer James Agee and photographer Walker Evans, on loan from the Farm Securities Administration, to Alabama to examine the economic plight of white cotton tenant farmers. Agee's report was a powerful indictment of the Southern economic system, but the story was killed by the magazine. One might surmise that Fortune found the piece too critical of Southern capitalism, but researchers have been unable to locate any correspondence explaining why this indictment was rejected for publication. Although Agee's 1936 trip to Alabama did provide important research for his 1941 book on sharecroppers, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, the original manuscript was part of the writer's papers discovered by his daughter in Agee's Greenwich Village home. The James Agee Trust then transferred this collection to the University of Tennessee Special Collections Library where the typescript "Cotton Tenants" was found. In 2012, approximately one-third of the document was published in The Baffler by editor John Summers who worked with Melville House to release the complete document. Fifty years after Agee's death, this trove of his manuscripts turned out to include a typescript labeled Cotton Tenants. Once examined, the pages made it clear that Agee had in fact written a masterly, 30,000-word report for Fortune. Published here in full for the first time, and accompanied by thirty of Walker Evans's historic photos, Cotton Tenants is an eloquent report of three families struggling through desperate times.
