Resonanztheorie…des Hörens auf (die zum Teil auch widerrufen worden ist). "Nach ihr hat man sich das Innenohr als Empfänger mit einer großen Zahl von abgestimmten Resonatoren vorzustellen, von denen immer nur diejenigen ansprechen und einen Nervenreiz ausüben, deren Eigenfrequenz mit der des Schalls übereinstimmt" (W. Lottermoser, in: MGG 6, Sp. 127). - Helmholtz [1821-1894] wirkte viele Jahre sehr erfolgreich neben Bunsen und Kirchhoff an der Heidelberger Universität, seit 1870 in gleicher Stellung in Berlin. Dort versammelte er in seinem Haus die wissenschaftliche und künstlerische Elite der Stadt; zu seinen Freunden gehörte auch der Geiger Joseph Joachim.
